The Directorate of History and Heritage (DHH) is mandated to preserve and communicate Canada’s military history, and foster pride in our military heritage. The Directorate is accountable for providing a coherent, horizontal perspective to, and strategic integration of, the management of programs and initiatives related to CAF history, dress, ceremonies, Group honours, museums, heritage, music and historic casualty identification. DHH maintains strategic-level collaborative networks and partnerships within DND/CAF, with the Office of the Chancellery (Rideau Hall), with Canadian Heritage, with Veterans Affairs, and with other government departments and institutions.

Duties

📚 We are hiring two historian positions:

Reporting to the Chief Historian, your primary duties will include researching and writing about major phases of Canadian military history for publication. You will be providing information and advice related to historical inquiries from various audiences, representing the Directorate of History and Heritage nationally and internationally.

Reporting to the Heritage Officer, your primary duties will include researching and writing about the history and evolution of the Canadian military ceremonial heritage (colors, dress, insignia, music, heraldry, etc), the Casualty Identification Programme, and providing heritage information and advice to various audiences.

This process may be used to staff the same or similar positions with various tenures, language or security requirements within DND.

EDUCATION:
• Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with an acceptable specialization in history, history of art, anthropology or some other specialty relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in conducting historical research and analysis, using archival or other primary sources.
• Experience in communicating the results of research in a range of media, including but not limited to written reports, presentations and articles.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
• Doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a field related to the position, such as, but not limited to, Canadian History, Military History, War Studies, Defence Studies or some other specialty relevant to the position.

• Experience with programs, policies or projects related to military history or heritage (such as, but not limited to, ceremonies, dress, museums, group honours or music).
• Experience developing policies or procedures, or delivering programs related to the preservation of an organization’s historical documentation.
• Experience documenting the experiences of under-represented groups in military history or defence studies (e.g., Indigenous people, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, women).
• Experience with genealogical research.
• Experience leading a team.

• Knowledge in one or more of the following:
- Canada’s military history;
- Canadian historical subject area;
- Canadian Armed Forces customs and traditions.

• Knowledge of current historical interpretations, methodologies and techniques.
