The Coastal Hazard Modeller is a Research Scientist who will undertake research with minimal supervision to improve the understanding of coastal hazards in Canada as part of a national program. The position reports to the Marine and Coastal Section of the GSC Pacific and works with colleagues across the country.

The intent is to staff one (1) SE-RES position on a determinate (temporary) basis, located in Vancouver or Victoria, BC.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process and may be used to staff identical or similar positions (SE-RES-01, SE-RES-02 or SE-RES-03) within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential, or Bilingual), various methods for staffing a bilingual position (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Education
Ed1: Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in coastal engineering, quantitative coastal geomorphology, or in another field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position, OR the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification.
Note: The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master’s or bachelor’s degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.
Experience
EX1: Experience in numerical coastal flood modelling of storm surge and related effects.
EX2: Experience in sediment transport modelling.
EX3: Experience working on a multi-disciplinary science team.
EX4: Productivity/Recognition - Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
•Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
•Operational research and scientific analysis;
•Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.
Asset Experience
AEX1: Experience working with instrumentation for coastal and shallow marine environmental monitoring.
AEX2: Experience in tsunami modelling.
AEX3: Experience in working with Indigenous communities
AEX4: Experience developing computer programs and scripts for coastal flood hazard modelling
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
OR1: Willing to participate and lead field data collection (marine and land-based).

All Research Scientist (RES) appointments are incumbent based. Therefore, the level of the position is determined by the qualifications/accomplishments of the successful candidate as determined by a committee.
Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
