Duties

This project involves the study of Cretaceous sedimentology and stratigraphy in the phosphatic, manganiferous ironstones in northwestern Northwest Territories. The study will begin by focussing on existing samples collected from the Rapid Creek Formation. Initial work will consist of hand sample descriptions, including mineral and sedimentary fabric identification, and optical and scanning electron microscopy. Fieldwork in subsequent years is anticipated in northwestern Northwest Territories. The project aims to develop a sequence stratigraphic framework for ironstones in order to refine regional stratigraphic models as part of the GEM GeoNorth Program of the Geological Survey of Canada.

• Currently enrolled or willing to enroll at Queen’s University (Kingston) in a Master of Science program with a specialization in Geology, Sedimentology, Stratigraphy or a related discipline that requires research as part of the curriculum.
• Graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Geology or Environmental Science from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Degree equivalency

In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.

• Fieldwork experience.
• Experience working in a laboratory setting.

• The student must be willing to carry out laboratory work and possess or obtain all required safety training.
