EDUCATION
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of Earth Sciences.
Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).
Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
- Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
- Operational research and scientific analysis;
- Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.
EXPERIENCE
- Significant experience* performing elemental concentration analyses of geological matrices using laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) analytical techniques (NB. throughout this document, “LA-ICP-MS” specifically refers to using laser ablation analytical protocols on geological matrices);
- Experience performing LA-ICP-MS raw data reduction and interpretation;
- Experience developing new research approaches and novel analytical methodologies in the field of LA-ICP-MS;
- Experience developing research projects, including conceptualization, implementation and delivering scientific results, in the field of geochemistry as applied to crustal geology or mineral ore deposit studies;
- Experience presenting research results to the scientific community through oral presentations and publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
*Significant experience means: tuning and optimizing of LA-ICP-MS systems; independent operation; and processing acquired data, gained over a period of at least two years, within the last five years.
ASSET EDUCATION
Graduation with a doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in the field of Earth Sciences with a specialization in geochemistry.
ASSET EXPERIENCE
- Experience performing isotopic ratio analyses of geological matrices using LA-ICP-MS (e.g., using multi-collector (LA-MC-ICP-MS) and/or triple quadrupole (LA-QQQ-ICP-MS));
- Experience maintaining and troubleshooting laser ablation and mass spectrometer instrumentation;
- Experience developing software for LA-ICP-MS data reduction;
- Experience applying multivariate statistical and/or artificial intelligence computational techniques to the analysis of large data sets;
- Experience in the acquisition and interpretation of geological field data;
- Experience developing reference materials for LA-ICP-MS analysis.
