Duties

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

The Public Health Nurse, and Home and Community Care Nurse collaborates in the delivery of comprehensive health programs which include promoting, protecting and preserving the health of First Nations populations on reserve. Health Care programs are designed in partnership with community members and leaders to promote environments that support good health. The Registered Nurse adheres to the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice; promoting health, building individual and community capacity, building relationships, facilitating access and equity, and demonstrating professional responsibility and accountability.

The maintenance of cultural competence and the provision of culturally safe care are paramount in these areas of practice.

The roles and activities of Registered Nurses in these First Nations communities include:

Public Health - responsibilities such as communicable disease control, well child clinics, pre-natal and post-natal programs, school health, health promotion, disease and injury prevention

and/or

Home and Community Care - responsibilities such case management, chronic disease management, wound care, post-operative care in client homes

Work environment

First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB), Indigenous Services Canada, is recruiting Registered Nurses to provide quality, evidence-informed nursing services, respectful of culture and intended to enhance the health of First Nations people for the communities of Saddle Lake and Sunchild. In these positions you would enjoy autonomous, varied work providing Public health and Home and Community Care services while immersed in diverse First Nations cultures.

The position based in Enoch, Alberta, is for a float team nurse position. In this positions you would enjoy autonomous, varied work travelling to many of the Alberta First Nation Communities while immersed in diverse First Nations cultures. Float Team Nurses would be required to travel from the position location (Enoch) to any of the following communities on a regular basis:

Enoch
Goodfish Lake
Heart Lake
Paul Band
Saddle Lake
Sunchild
Duncans
Sturgeon Lake

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to fill two community health nurse and two home care nurse positions on an indeterminate basis in Saddle Lake, one indeterminate community health nurse position in Sunchild, and one term position on the float team based out of Enoch (please see 'work environment' for more information on the float team role).

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various security requirements and conditions of employment on a term, acting and/or permanent basis in Alberta.

Education:

Graduation with a degree* from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.

*A baccalaureate or higher-level degree, bachelor of science in nursing.

Occupational Certification:

Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.

Experience:

Independent clinical experience as a registered nurse (RN) in one of any combination of the following 3 areas:
i. Community Health Nursing
ii. Emergency Care
and/or
iii. Acute Care
