Shore side Positions with the Canadian Coast Guard
About 40% of the CCG workforce is made up of people working in shore-based jobs. The overall function of these positions is to support CCG operations. They do not involve working on CCG floating assets. Instead, they can be operational (e.g. communications, logistics, trades, etc.) or administrative (e.g. management, planning, policy, etc.).

On October 6, 2021, the Government of Canada announced details of its plans to require vaccination across the federal public service.

Intent of the process

The intent of this selection process is to create a pool of qualified candidates to be used to staff this or similar positions within the Canadian Coast Guard in the Atlantic Region on an indeterminate, specified period (term), acting, deployment, secondment, or assignment basis.

There is an immediate need to staff one position in Dartmouth, NS.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION:
►Secondary school diploma (high school) or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
►Possession of valid Inter-Provincial Red Seal Certification in Welding.

EXPERIENCE:
►*Recent and significant experience in the preparation, design, fabrication and fit-up of components and structures using steel, aluminum and stainless steel.
►Experience welding metals using manual, semi-automatic and automatic arc welding equipment.
►Experience with flux cored arc welding (FCAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), Mig, Tig, acetylene and oxygen.
►Experience preparing documents, including detailed reports, related to visual inspections.
►Experience installing and maintaining welding equipment and tools.
►Experience welding in flat, vertical, horizontal and overhead positions.

*recent and significant is defined as a minimum 6 months Red Seal experience within the last 2 years.

KNOWLEDGE:

✔ Knowledge of Personal Protective equipment used in an industrial operations environment.
✔ Knowledge of welding procedures, practices and codes.

ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
✔ Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
✔ Ability to diagnose and complete effective repairs to welding related components.
✔ Ability to read and interpret blue prints.
✔ Ability to operate a computer using MS office software (such as Word, Outlook)

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:

EXPERIENCE:
►Experience with purging and pressure testing of gases and monitoring, of enclosed structures.

Conditions of employment

• Reliability Status security clearance
• Valid Provincial Class 5 Driver’s License.
• Requirement to climb towers and work at heights in excess of 2.4 meters.
• Requirement to travel for extended periods of time to remote sites via trucks, boats, UTVs and aircraft
• Requirement to work weekends/overtime and travel on short notice
• Requirement to access remote sites over rugged terrain and work outdoors in extremes of environmental conditions .
• Health Canada Pre-Placement Medical will be required
• All employees of the core public administration are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and attest to their vaccination status unless accommodated based on a medical contraindication, religion, or another prohibited ground for discrimination as defined under the Canadian Human Rights Act.
