Duties

Space Weather & Geomagnetism Operations Manager:
Manages a team operating sensor networks and producing authoritative information on geomagnetic activity and space weather for Canada,. The Canadian Hazards Information Service (CHIS) provides authoritative scientific and technical information regarding earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides, space weather, geomagnetic activity, nuclear explosion tests, and nuclear and radiological incidents.

CHIS operates Canada-wide seismic, hydroacoustic, acoustic, and geomagnetic sensor networks as well as mobile radiation sensors to monitor hazards and provide timely notification and characterization of their occurrence.

Intent of the process

The intent of this selection process is to staff one position in Ottawa, Bilingual imperative CBC, on a permanent basis.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual (Imperative and/or Non-Imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.).

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, or some other science relevant to the position.

• NOTE: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

Experience in managing scientific or technical human resources*.
Experience in the planning and accounting (managing) for financial resources** allocated to projects.
Experience in providing technical advice, recommendations, writing and presenting briefing material to senior management (Director level and above).
Experience in providing and receiving information in area of expertise to internal, external clients and stakeholders.

* Applicants must clearly demonstrate that they have human resources management experience - defined as: having supervised staff, assigned work, managed and assessed performance and development. This experience needs to have been acquired within the last five (5) years for a period of at least one (1) year.
** Applicants must demonstrate evidence of financial management experience - defined as: managing and being accountable for a budget. This experience needs to have been acquired within the last five (5) years for a period of at least one (1) year.
