The Assistant Commissioners, Western, Central, Atlantic and Arctic, are accountable for the planning and delivery of CCG services to Canadians that make critical contributions to the safety, accessibility and security of Canadian waters and support government priorities and economic prosperity. Working as team, each Assistant Commissioner provides leadership and direction, across large, complex regions, of a wide array of activities and services that ensure Canada’s waters are safe and secure, help to facilitate maritime commerce, and contribute to sustainable aquatic ecosystems.

The intent of the selection process is to staff the position of Assistant Commissioner, Arctic Region within the Canadian Coast Guard.

EDUCATION:
• Acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
EXPERIENCE:
EX01: Recent (1*) and significant (2*) experience, in a leadership position, in managing a multidisciplinary team to support the delivery of business operations, programs or services in a complex environment.
EX02: Significant (2*) experience in establishing and managing effective working relationships and partnerships, including negotiations, with various internal and external partners and stakeholders towards the achievement of common objectives.
EX03: Significant (2*) experience in providing briefings, strategic advice and recommendations to senior management on complex files.
EX04: Experience in managing human (3*) and financial resources (4*).
Definitions:
1*: Recent experience is defined as experience acquired within the last five (5) years.
2*: Significant experience is understood to mean the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of complex related activities over a period of at least three (3) years.
3*: Candidates must clearly demonstrate that they have managed human resources and indicate the number of staff they supervised (direct and indirect reports). Some examples of managing human resources may include assigning work, managing performance, developing resourcing plans, determining needs, approving training, etc.
4*: Candidates must clearly demonstrate that they have managed financial resources and indicate the size of the budget(s).
EDUCATION:
• Graduation with a degree (1*) from a recognized post-secondary institution (2*).
Definitions:
1*: Unless it is otherwise specified (e.g., Master’s degree), the term “degree” refers to a baccalaureate as established by educational authorities.
2*: A public or private institution that has been given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and other credentials by a public or private act of a provincial/territorial legislature or through a government-mandated quality assurance mechanism. For greater certainty, also included are institutions authorized to grant specific academic credentials for specific academic programs.
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience working internationally or in an international context.
• Experience in leading a complex and significant organizational change.
