On October 6, 2021, the Government of Canada announced details of its plans to require vaccination across the federal public service.

As per the new Policy on COVID-19 Vaccination for the Core Public Administration Including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, federal public servants in the Core Public Administration and members of the RCMP must attest to their vaccination status. The requirement for employees to be fully vaccinated applies whether they are teleworking, working remotely or working on-site. This is a condition of employment and it applies to indeterminate (permanent), determinate (term), casual, and student hiring. Duties

The primary role of the Vessel Repair Technician is to carry out the new installation and preventative and corrective maintenance (including overhaul, refit, repair, configuration changes, tests and inspection) of hull, mechanical and electrical systems on small vessels and their trailers and other associated equipment.

Typical equipment that the Vessel Repair Technician works on are:

• Fast Rescue Craft;
• Motor Lifeboats;
• Self-Propelled Barges;
• Science and Hydrographic Launches;
• Boat Trailers.

Intent of the process

There is a need to staff one position indeterminately in Burlington ON.

This selection process will be used to create a pool of qualified candidates which may be used to staff similar positions on an indeterminate, specified period (term), or acting basis with the Canadian Coast Guard

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Certificate from a recognized educational institution as a marine engine mechanic or technician in the last 2 years
OR
Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) marine engine training certifications, OEM marine engine training certification must include a minimum of 3 months course work (factory led courses that include a practical component) and minimum three years’ experience in the last ten years conducting routine maintenance, troubleshooting or repairs on hulls, electrical or mechanical systems (including internal combustion engines) on small vessels
OR
Certificate from a recognized educational institution as a marine engine mechanic or technician and minimum three years’ experience in the last ten years conducting routine maintenance, troubleshooting or repairs on hulls, electrical or mechanical systems (including internal combustion engines) on small vessels
OR
Occupational specialization as a mechanic or an electro-mechanic:
For the purposes of this selection process, candidates may demonstrate their occupational specialization through any of the following:

Successful completion of post-secondary education or vocational diploma in a field relevant to the duties of the position, such as Heavy duty equipment mechanics (NOC#7312)*, Automotive service technician (NOC#7321)*, Recreational vehicle mechanics (NOC#7334)*.
OR
Significant** experience as a mechanic, technician or electro-mechanic in one of the fields listed in the above paragraph, including experience gained servicing vehicles, aircraft or vessels in the Canadian Armed Forces.

**Significant experience is defined as experience associated with having performed a broad range of related activities, which could normally be acquired during a period of approximately 5 years. Experience acquired through training sessions in the field of the position to be staffed could be considered acceptable.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Possess Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Certificate, issued by Transport Canada

Possess Restricted Radio Operator Certificate, Marine, issued by Industry Canada

Experience in conducting small vessel inspections including performing trials on new craft

Experience using forklifts or heavy equipment, including marine travel lifts and hydraulic self-propelled trailers

Experience in boat trailer maintenance and repair

Experience performing remote service calls for vessel repair

Experience operating small vessels

Experience in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

Experience in the use of asset management software and/or a work order tracking system
