Stream 1 : Agronomy
-Provide technical support and assist various research projects on crop diseases.
-Organize seeding plans and set up seeds for research trials.
-Support with seeding of the field plots.
-Organize and prepare specific seed treatments.
-Field trial maintenance.
-Survey commercial fields for plant diseases.
-Collect plant and soil samples from field plots and commercial fields.
-Perform disease assessments in commercial fields and field plots.
-Maintain a detailed annual field log of activities.
-Computer data entry and verification as well as inventory documentation and organization.
-Assist in various research projects in a laboratory when required.
Stream 2 : Plant Pathology and Molecular Biology
-Provide technical support and assist in various research projects on crop diseases in a laboratory environment.
-Perform plant, soil and fungal DNA extractions, conventional PCR, qPCR and droplet digital PCR.
-Run agarose gels and perform PCR purification and interpretation of sequencing results.
-Prepare media for culturing.
-Perform culturing, isolation, and identification of plant pathogens through microscopic and molecular diagnostics.
-Catalogue and maintain fungal isolates.
-Conduct experiments in plant pathology, preparing fungal inocula for application within a specific field and greenhouse trials.
-Perform pathogen inoculation and disease evaluation.
-Participate in analyzing data and preparing reports.
-Assist in various research projects in the field when required.
Brandon Research and Development Centre supports innovative research, development, technology and knowledge transfer activities related to the following AAFC Science Sector Strategies, Agro-Ecosystem Resilience, Cereals and Pulses / Oilseeds and Horticulture focusing on developing new and improved varieties of wheat, oats and barley, sustainable and profitable crop production systems, and agro-ecosystems. This research advances scientific knowledge and delivers innovative technologies in the areas of: agricultural management systems and land resource conservation for the Black and Dark Gray soil zones; agro-ecological processes and environmental sustainability; varietal development of barley; beef production systems; and management.
Immediate need:
Stream 1: Agronomy - 1 term position (18 months)
Stream 2: Plant Pathology and Molecular Biology - 1 term position (18 months)
A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures as well as various linguistic requirements.

EDUCATION
A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

EXPERIENCE
Experience planning or conducting or carrying out agronomic, or plant pathology, or molecular biology research in the laboratory and/or field.
Experience operating or maintaining laboratory or field or greenhouse research equipment or instrumentation used in agronomy or plant pathology or molecular biology.
Experience with methods for crops assessment including agronomic quality or disease or pest response.
Experience providing technical support in research projects.
EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in plant science, plant pathology, plant breeding, biology, plant physiology, microbiology, environmental science, natural resources, horticulture, genetics, biochemistry or a related discipline, OR an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
