Work environment

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) manages Canada's diplomatic and consular relations, promotes the country's international trade and leads Canada’s international development and humanitarian assistance. GAC employs over 10,000 employees, over half of whom are located at the department’s 178 missions abroad. Our organization offers a healthy, inclusive and diverse workplace where respect, teamwork, and collaboration are part of our culture, and where innovation is valued.

Security Investments Oversight Office

The Security Investments Oversight Office (ARI), led by a Director reporting to the Director General for Real Property Strategic Policy and Planning (ARD), consists of two horizontally integrated units: the Strategic Reporting and Liaison Unit (SRLU) and the Analytical Support Unit (ASU). The core of the duties consists of two main activity streams:

a) The strategic coordination of Duty of Care program activities to support mission security abroad both within Platform Branch and between Platform and other Global Affairs Canada Branches; and,

b) The collection, analysis and presentation of data related to Security Investments in Canada’s missions around the world.

The Security Investments Oversight Office (ARI) provides regular, independent reviews of major and minor capital projects and security systems and equipment purchases aimed at enhancing the physical security and seismic resilience of Canada’s global network of diplomatic missions, (e.g., embassies, high commissions, consulates). This program of work amounts to approximately $700M of capital projects and another $760M of non-capital-project initiatives.

The primary objective of ARI’s reports on security investments in missions abroad is to provide senior management with the information required for them to undertake the necessary level of oversight of the many activities involved. More specifically, ARI’s reports inform Senior Management of the financial status, (including the tracking of authority limits), implementation status, project and financial risks, performance metrics, and benefits realised for all Duty of Care related activities within Platform Branch. ARI also facilitates strategic coordination amongst the various units within Platform Branch delivering security projects, as well as serving as liaison between Platform Branch and rest of Global Affairs Canada on security matters, including governance and budget reallocations.
