We are committed to providing an inclusive and barrier-free work environment, starting with the hiring process. If you need to be accommodated during any phase of the evaluation process, please use the Contact information below to request specialized accommodation. All information received in relation to accommodation will be kept confidential.
When submitting your application, you must clearly demonstrate in the screening questionnaire how you meet the education and experiences listed under ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS and the experiences listed under OTHER QUALIFICATIONS. Please describe using concrete examples HOW, WHEN and WHERE you have acquired these qualifications. It is not enough to just say that you have the required qualifications, or to list your current responsibilities. An effective approach would be to write a paragraph or two to show that you have the qualification required by ensuring the clarity and precision of details. Résumé may only be used as a secondary source to validate the qualifications described. Comments such as 'refer to my attached résumé' will not be accepted and may result in your application being rejected.
Multidisciplinary Hydrographers are responsible for the acquisition, validation, management, and transformation of data from internal and external sources for the creation and maintenance of Canada’s official nautical charts, related products and information. Services are provided to support the program objectives and initiatives of the CHS.
Services are provided on behalf of CHS managers and staff to external clients such as the commercial shipping industry, recreational boating, fishing industry, other government departments, and academia, who use these products and services for safe navigation and the conduct of technical and scientific studies. These products and services protect lives, property and the marine environment and are essential for safe marine navigation in Canadian waters.
The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) is part of Fisheries and Oceans Canada within the Science Sector. Since 1883, CHS has studied the oceans, lakes and rivers of Canada to ensure their safe and sustainable use and to allow navigation in these waters.
CHS's vision is to be a world class authority and supplier of hydrospatial information, a responsive supplier of hydrographic products and services, and a valuable partner in ocean technology development and applications. The CHS office in Mont-Joli has more than 60 employees, 20 of whom were recently hired, as part of the federal government's Oceans Protection Plan (OPP). Over the next few years, OPP will contribute in modernizing marine cartography and also the way to achieve it.
CHS office in Mont-Joli works closely with the other four CHS offices, Dartmouth (NSE), Sidney (BC), Burlington (ON) and Ottawa (ON). Our hydrographic and cartographic operations include acquiring or receiving hydrographic data (e.g. bathymetry, water level), the processing, validation, management and integration of that data for the purpose of updating or creating modern nautical publications (e.g. nautical charts, sailing directions, tide tables).
The CHS office in Mont-Joli is located at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, a Fisheries and Oceans Canada research center, situated near Mont-Joli and halfway between Rimouski and Matane. The Institute is housed on an enchanting site along the St. Lawrence Estuary.
The purpose of this process is to create a pool of qualified candidates to fill positions of varying lengths (temporary or permanent) within CHS, Québec Region.
CAREER PROGRESSION
The CHS maintains a structured national Multidisciplinary Hydrographer (MDH) Career Development Program in order to train qualified Hydrographers who are able to carry different tasks. The Program includes on-the-job learning, interspersed with formal training modules to ensure the professional development and career progression of MDH from EG-03 ($ 57 924 – $ 70 474) level to EG-05 ($ 70 088 - $ 85 272). The progression is done within approximately 5 years after the initial appointment or entry into the program.
Please note that the experience and its relevance to the position to be filled will be considered to establish the entry level of candidates.
