Duties

Under the supervision of the Experimental Farm Operations Supervisor, the incumbent will:

- Perform field and greenhouse activities (field preparation/seedbed, seeding, tilling) for scientific purposes;
- Participate in maintenance activities of the experimental plots;
- Maintain field equipment: tractors, sprayers, combines and other agricultural and landscape maintenance equipment;
- Operate/maintain vehicles and equipment used for field and landscape maintenance or greenhouse work: light and heavy trucks, tractors, combines, edge cutters, commercial mowers, snow removal equipment;
- Clean and set up premises: workshops, pesticide or fertilizer mixing stations, laboratories;
- Maintain detailed records of activities and inputs for equipment maintenance including spraying activities.

Work environment

The Quebec Research and Development Centre (QRDC) is part of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada`s network of 20 research centres. The QRDC has a leading expertise in agri-environment and forage crops. Our mission is divided into three axes which are:

- Improving agricultural productivity and sustainability in cold and wet climates;
- Improving environmental performances through field crop systems integrating the use of perennial forage species;
- Reducing environmental impacts to maintain and improve the health of the Canadian agroecosystem.

The QRDC has 3 worksites which are:

Québec/Sainte-Foy: Main building with 66 offices; 34 laboratories and 3 greenhouses.
Saint-Augustin Agronomic Station: 42.8 ha of experimental plots; laboratories and greenhouses.
Normandin Experimental Farm: 145 ha of cultivated land of which approximately 20 ha are experimental plots.

Intent of the process

The short-term need is for a position to be filled in Normandin (Quebec) and in the interim, a position will be to be filled in Saint-Augustin (Quebec).

If you don’t immediately receive a job offer at AAFC, qualified candidates will also be placed in a talent pool to be used for staffing similar permanent or temporary positions in the future. The skill specialization(s), work location, language profile, and security clearance requirements will vary according to the position being staffed.

In addition to permanent staffing, we will also use this inventory when needing to hire experienced public servants who are interested in temporary opportunities such as acting appointments, assignments, or secondments.

Ability and willingness to obtain a valid Class “3” type driver’s license for Stake truck & trailer combinations.
Ability and willingness to obtain a valid Pesticide Applicators Certificate.
Ability and willingness to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise) with exposure to animal manure).
Ability and willingness to tolerate the presence of irritants such as dust, pollen and spores. Known allergies must be controlled through use of protective mask and/or medication and must not impinge on tasks to be performed.
Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.
Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work activities including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects. (up to 20 kg).
