Duties

Responsibility and challenges of the position:
CanmetMINING, Natural Resources Canada has received funding for a research project to support the development of Critical Metals.

Critical minerals are indispensable to a world seeking to transition away from carbon. Canada’s mineral sector is an important global supplier of critical minerals that are essential ingredients to our modern economies and emerging technologies. They have few substitutes in use and face high supply risks. Canada’s advanced mineral projects offer a secure, reliable source of supply. Yet their extraction, processing, and application have their challenges and leave a large unsustainable footprint. In this program, the student will seek to find more sustainable methods to extract and separate these critical minerals utilizing physical and chemical methods (flotation) and hydrometallurgical techniques.

The student will be the primary contributor to the research work outputs, which may include technical reports, scientific journal articles, and conference presentations. The position also includes planning, identifying resource needs for the development and completion of the research activities. Note that any Intellectual Property created from carrying out this research will rest with Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada as represented by the Minister of Natural Resources.

Work environment

Work Environment:

Natural Resources Canada’s CanmetMINING is located in National Capital Region, Ottawa, Ontario. With about 100 scientists, engineers, and technicians on staff and research facilities and offices in Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, CanmetMINING is one of the largest mining technology development centres in the country. CanmetMINING helps the Canadian mining sector through exploratory research, specialized services, and technology transfer.

Students working at CanmetMINING will join a multidisciplinary research group engaged in leading-edge research in water management and mineral processing and can take advantage of the opportunities to gain valuable industry-relevant experience.
