This position is located at the Bells Corners Complex, situated within Ottawa’s Greenbelt, yet close to restaurants and shopping within the area of Bells Corners. Situated between Nepean and Kanata, we are close to the Bayshore bus station as well as the Eagleson/Terry Fox Park and Ride with bus access to the Complex. Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or another field of natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer approved alternative for the SE classification.

The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master’s or bachelor’s degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.

Productivity / Recognition:
Recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
a. research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
b. operational research and scientific analysis;
c. planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.
“Productivity/Recognition” also includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment.

Degree equivalency

Experience in proposing, planning, coordinating and conducting applied research and development in the field of energy conversion systems which includes activities such as project scheduling, project costing, preparing bid specifications, procurement, pilot-scale installation and commissioning.
Experience with computational and experimental research methods.
Experience in reviewing literature, writing patents, writing scientific research paper and preparing comprehensive technical reports.
Experience in interacting with industry, research and development organizations to maintain awareness of emerging engineering issues.
Experience in developing, proposing, negotiating and managing contracts and agreements with other government departments, universities, industry and private organizations.

Knowledge:

Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of combustion, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, fluid dynamics and power cycles which can be applied to problems encountered in the design and analysis of energy conversion systems.

Knowledge of operations, developments, trends, and emerging technologies in the field of combustion, power production systems, and advanced energy conversion systems.

Knowledge of the adverse emissions from fuel conversion systems, the potential consequences of such, and of ways and means of mitigating these emissions

Knowledge of computational techniques for design, modeling, analysis, report writing and preparation of presentations.

Abilities:

Ability to verify, analyze and interpret data, so as to draw relevant conclusions and present recommendations

Experience:

Experience in research studies in the fields of advanced combustion technologies such as oxy-fuel and pressurized oxy-fuel combustion for utility and industrial combustion systems including field and laboratory trials.

Experience in research studies in the fields of energy loss, efficiency improvement, performance optimization and pinch/exergy analysis for power generation and industrial processes such as; oil sands related technology, power cycles, alumina production process, pulp & paper production processes, etc.

Experience in any of the following: design, lay-out, construction, commissioning, operation of combustion, energy conversion systems and industrial processes.

Experience using modeling/simulation software,

Experience in using CAD software for design of lab experimental equipment such as; high pressure vessels, boilers and furnaces.

Experience leading teams

Knowledge:

Knowledge of modeling techniques such as pinch/exergy analysis

Knowledge of specific industrial processes and process equipment.

Knowledge of engineering practices for designing, operating and maintaining equipment.
