Duties

The person hired will work on the development of an Atlantic Salmon Individual Based Model, coupled to a regional bio-physical oceanographic circulation model, to determine the physical and biological oceanographic processes influencing salmon migration.

A PC-03 is generally expected to: plan, conduct and lead multidisciplinary at-sea, field, laboratory, or modelling studies; develop new instrumentation, methods, technology and quality control/assurance procedures and protocols for the collection, analysis, or management of ocean science data; supervise support staff; develop quantitative models to analyze and interpret data; prepare and present reports in support of requests for advice from management; contribute to the peer review of reports and scientific publications; publish as lead author and co-authors of technical reports and primary publications; and contribute to incremental science knowledge. Individuals in the PC-02 category assist with the work described above.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with a specialization in physics, ocean sciences, mathematics, engineering or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

BOTH PC-02 & PC-03 POSITIONS:

Work experience conducting research or analysing scientific information related to physical or chemical or biological oceanography or other relevant environmental science (a minimum of 1 year of experience is required for PC-02 positions, while a minimum of 2 years is required for PC-03 positions). Two years of completed graduate studies, or a diploma in graduate studies in ocean sciences may be accepted as work experience.

Experience in conducting quantitative analyses and interpreting data using statistical analytical techniques or tools associated with oceanography or environmental science.

Experience in using modern computer programming or scripting languages for scientific purposes ((Fortran, Python, Matlab).

Experience with the validation and analysis of the results from state-of-the-art ocean circulation models.

Experience contributing to the writing of scientific papers or technical documents.

PC-03 POSITIONS ONLY:

Experience designing, planning and undertaking scientific projects.

Experience collaborating with or coordinating multi-disciplinary science teams.

Experience in preparing and writing scientific papers or technical documents.

Experience developing and providing scientific information, interpretation, or advice to the public, stakeholders, managers or scientists related to scientific projects.

Post-graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in physical oceanography.

Degree equivalency

Experience with ocean circulation modelling. This must include experience running models and modifying model code.

Experience with biogeochemical modelling.

Experience with lagrangian particle tracking models.

Experience with Individual Based Models (IBM).

Experience in programming with Python.

Experience in data processing and analysis in formats such as NetCDF.

Could be required to perform overtime in the evenings or on weekends.

For some positions, the successful candidate could be required to hold a valid driver’s licence.
Much of the work is performed in a climate-controlled office environment at a desk or workstation. There is an occasional requirement to travel to national headquarters and other regions for meetings and to national/international venues when attending conferences and representing the department.
Participation in at-sea, field, and laboratory studies may require periods of greater physical effort when climbing ship’s ladders, deploying and retrieving instrumentation, traversing rough terrain while carrying equipment and samples, and exposure to inclement weather, and caustic and toxic chemicals.
