Challenges of the position include processing spatial data for the analyses of movement and habitat metrics. Using software such as R and ArcGIS to perform spatial and statistical analyses. Data and results will be prepared for community reports and peer review publications. These publications require a standardized peer review process that must be followed.
The Arctic research team out of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is based at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Research conducted provides information and advice to support the management of Arctic fisheries resources, their habitat and Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and on the Yukon North Slope. Successful management and conservation of these resources depends on acquiring, interpreting and sharing biological information, the processes affecting them and the ecosystem of which they are part.
The responsibilities of this position is to investigate the movement behaviour of Eastern Beaufort Sea (EBS) beluga using historical and recently collected telemetry data. The research will focus on linking oceanographic features of poorly studied areas to understand the energetic needs of the EBS beluga whales over space and time.

The student must be currently enrolled or willing to enroll by January 4, 2022 in a MSc program as a full time student at the University of Manitoba in the field of Environment and Physical Geography or Biology.
