Assessment accommodation

The official workplace for the position is in Halifax. Depending on the needs and requirements of the service, the possibility of a telework arrangement could be considered. The request will be assessed in accordance with the provisions of the Directive on Telework.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff a term position of 12 to 24 months. Depending on future organization’s needs, an indeterminate opportunity may also be considered.

A pool of candidates will be established to staff similar or identical positions at Indigenous Services Canada with various tenure, linguistic profiles or security requirements.

Education:
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary program in environmental sciences or environmental technology related discipline or an acceptable combination of education or training with significant experience* as an environmental technologist.

*Significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of duties over a minimum period of three (3) years.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience in water sampling, safe handling practices and chain of custody.
Experience using databases including review and verification of data entry as well as in data review and preparation of reports.
Experience in preparing and delivering presentations.
Experience in the Environmental Review Process (ERP) under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (2012) or Impact Assessment Act (2019).

Certification:
Certification as an environmental technologist from a recognized body or eligible for certification.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience engaging stakeholders.

Knowledge:
Knowledge of First Nations communities and culture in the Atlantic region.
Knowledge of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) Climate Change and Health Adaptation Program for First Nations.

Abilities:
Ability to speak Mi'kmaq or Maliseet.

Operational Requirements:
Must be able to travel by vehicle and air to perform work related functions and to attend meetings throughout the region and in other parts of the country on behalf of ISC-FNIHB Atlantic.
Must be able and willing to travel to remote/isolated communities in small aircraft, staying overnight as required.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Valid driver's license required or personal mobility to a degree normally associated with the possession of a driver's license.
Use personal protective equipment as required.
Moderate physical effort often required in carrying out certain activities – ability to carry up to 20kg and traverse outdoor environments.

As part of the interview process candidates will be required to prepare and present a 20 minute presentation on a current or emerging environmental public health topic/issue to be determined.

On October 6, 2021, the Government of Canada announced details of its plans to require vaccination across the federal public service. As per the new Policy on COVID-19 Vaccination for the Core Public Administration Including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, federal public servants in the Core Public Administration and members of the RCMP must attest to their vaccination status. The requirement for employees to be fully vaccinated applies whether they are teleworking, working remotely or working on-site. This is a condition of employment and it applies to indeterminate (permanent), determinate (term), casual, and student hiring. Should you reach the point in the selection process where it is necessary to verify terms and conditions of employment then the hiring manager or a human resources representative will contact you in order to complete an attestation.

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
