Duties

Under the supervision of the Farm Operation Manager:
- Performs field/ greenhouse activities such as field / seedbed preparation, planting, scientific purposes.
- Participates in plot maintenance activities, controlled environmental studies and field-plot experiments.
- Operates hand and power tools and is responsible for the maintenance of greenhouse or field equipment such as tractors, sprayers, combines and various other farm and landscape equipment.
- Operates /maintains vehicles and equipment used in the maintenance of field, grounds maintenance or greenhouse work, such as one or more of the following: light and heavy trucks, tractors, combines, weed eaters, commercial mowers, snow removal equipment, irrigation equipment, forklifts, backhoes, small engines and generators.
- Maintains, sets up, adjusts and makes minor repairs or adjustments to tools and equipment used by self and others.
- Cleans and organizes assigned areas such as working areas such as shops, pesticide or fertilizer mixing locations, laboratories, greenhouses and field.
- Keeps a detailed record of activities and supplies for research or maintenance spraying, watering, mowing, maintenance and harvesting activities for research field and purposes using a variety of electronic/manual methods.

Work environment

The Harrow Research and Development Centre (Harrow RDC) located in Harrow, Ontario was established in 1909. It is one of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's (AAFC) network of 20 research and development centres. AAFC scientists at the Harrow RDC conduct research on field crops, plant breeding, weed science, plant pathology, soil science and entomology. The center supports 5 science strategies, in Horticulture, Greenhouse crops, Agro-Ecosystem Resilience, Oil Seeds, Pulses and Biodiversity and Bio Resources as well as integrated pest management and lead research in crop genomics and biotechnology. The centre also supports research on air, and water quality and plant nutrients. The centre is one of seven sites for AAFC’s Minor Use Pesticide Program where potential pest management trials are conducted in support of Canadian growers and industries.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
Experience in crop production (field or vegetable crops).
Experience in operating farm tractors and farm machinery.
Experience in repair and preventive maintenance of tractors, attachments and farm equipment.

• Ability and willingness to obtain a valid Class “A” type driver’s license for Stake truck & trailer combinations.
• Ability and willingness to obtain a valid Pesticide Applicators Certificate.
• Ability and willingness to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
• Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise) with exposure to animal manure).
• Ability and willingness to tolerate the presence of irritants such as dust, pollen and spores.
• Known allergies must be controlled through use of protective mask and/or medication and must not impinge on tasks to be performed.
• Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.
• Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work activities including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects. (up to 25kg).
