Duties

The incumbent will work in a laboratory setting on a project related to food science and nutrition research. The goal of the research is to develop new knowledge to improve the quality of cereal grains with respect to nutritional functionality, processing quality and utilization potential. Duties also include reviewing relevant literature, preparing experimental protocols, performing chemical analyses, conducting laboratory and pilot scale food processing, analyzing results and preparing scientific reports, posters and publications.

Work environment

Candidate will work closely with Dr. Malunga within in a research setting and collaborate with other AAFC team members such as scientists, technicians and students from the satellite laboratory of Morden Research and Development Centre, co-located on the University of Manitoba campus . Candidate will work in analytical laboratory and pilot plant facilities. Research samples will focus on grains and may include whole grains, hulls, flour and other milling products, starch, extracts and other grain-based products.

The work environment could involve dust, lab chemicals and other hazards that require safety training and the use of personal protective equipment.

Education:
Currently enrolled or willing and eligible to enroll in a Master’s of Science program at the University of Manitoba with specialization in: Food and Human Nutritional Sciences or related fields.

Note:
Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutritional Sciences, Food Science, Biochemistry or another related field.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience* with principles and techniques used in food processing or human nutrition research.
Experience* with analytical chemistry.

*In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.

Reliability Status security clearance - Each student hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) must meet the security requirements of the position as a condition of employment, and therefore will be asked by the hiring organization to complete security-relevant documents.
