Duties

• Administers and manages the vessel's financial, human and materiel resources to ensure that the vessel is operated within the allocated budget and in accordance with applicable plans, standards, programs, regulations and directives of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

• Plans, organizes, directs, controls and co-ordinates all the operations of the vessel and equipment in the performance of assigned tasks, and provides functional and operational advice on missions and mission objectives to Senior Management.

• Ensures the safety and security of the vessel in port and at sea, supervises the vessel's officers, crew and assigned staff, promotes their well-being and productivity as well as identifies the need for and conducts training.

• Promotes and maintains harmonious and mutually beneficial relationships among the employer, crew, client and contractor, and manages the grievance procedure.

• Directs helicopter and small craft operations as well as programs in Search and Rescue, Icebreaking, Environmental Response, Boating Safety, Conservation and Protection, Science and Marine Aids to Navigation programs.

• Enforces compliance and investigates acts of non-compliance with various acts and regulations, collects and gives evidence, and prepares court briefs.

• Provides a thorough Change of Command with the relieving Commanding Officer, including a review of pertinent vessel documents and relevant correspondence.

• Arranges and provides public guided tours of the ship.

• Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.

Occupational Certification:
• SO MAO 08: Valid Transport Canada STCW Certificate of Competency, Master 500GT Near Coastal or higher

• SO MAO 09 and MAO 10: Valid Transport Canada STCW Certificate of Competency Master Near Coastal or higher

Experience:
Minimum five years of experience as a Deck Officer, two of which need to be experience as Chief Officer on a large vessel(1000GT or greater)

SO MAO 09 and MAO 10: Experience in a shore position relating to marine management or marine training

Experience:
• Experience as Master on a large vessel(1000GT or greater)
• Experience as Master overseeing a maintenance or refit period
• Experience in providing advice to Senior Management with respect to marine operations
• Experience in managing employee(s); such as providing advice and
recommendations, supervising and motivating staff, preparing performance appraisals,
and managing Human Resource issues.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

-Health Canada medical are required for all seagoing personnel
-Maintain a valid Certificate of Competency
-Requirement to go to sea for prolonged periods of time and in adverse weather conditions
-Requirement to travel by air, land or by sea
-Requirement to wear and maintain a uniform, safety footwear, and personal protective equipment to Canadian Coast Guard standards
-Required to work overtime when required
-Willingness to be deployed within the Atlantic Region
-Compliance with the CCG Safety Management System and Standards
-Adherence to the Canadian Coast Guard Respiratory Protection Program
-For vessels assigned primarily to Search and Rescue operations, employees must be- within 30 minutes response time to the vessel during assigned work period
-Valid Canadian Passport (for identified positions)

Salary for SO-MAO-08 - $42.74 to $47.39 per hour.
Salary for SO-MAO-09 - $46.01 to $51.02 per hour.
Salary for SO-MAO-10 - $50.16 to $55.60 per hour.

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
