Duties

Are you passionate about migratory birds, species at risk, and conservation?

Do you crave being part of a team of leaders, experts, and partners collaborating to manage and conserve habitat for migratory birds and species at risk in Canada’s northern territories?

Do you want to work where advancing reconciliation and indigenous leadership and partnership are a part of your day-to-day work?

If you answered yes to all of the above, then please think about sharing your passion for conservation and ‘need to lead’ with the Northern Region of the Canadian Wildlife Service. We employ six unit head-level positions, two each in these sections:

•Wildlife and Habitat Assessment and Regulatory Affairs (including work on Migratory Birds, Environmental Assessment, and data and information management, Wildlife Emergency Response)
•Conservation Planning and Stewardship (including work on species at risk and associated programs)
•Conservation Partnerships and Protected Areas (includes: managing National Wildlife Areas and Migratory Bird Sanctuaries, Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas, land use and marine spatial planning programs)

All of the incumbents work directly with Indigenous and territorial governments, as well as a variety of non-governmental organizations, collaborating to deliver the exciting conservation and management mandate of the Canadian Wildlife Service in the three territories.

The focus of the federal government on the “nature agenda” has led to amazing collaborations and opportunities to genuinely advance conservation work. Joining our team will mean working with others to make a bona fide difference to conservation.

Position Duties include:
-Provides leadership and management of the human, financial, and information resources of the relevant Unit, including supervising as many as 10 or more staff.
-Establishes, maintains and participates in partnerships, committees and working groups with federal and territorial government departments, Indigenous organizations and/or non-government organizations on initiatives related to wildlife and habitat conservation.
-May be responsible for implementation of the Species at Risk Act, the Migratory Birds Convention Act, the four federal environmental assessment acts in northern Canada or the Canada Wildlife Act depending on position.
-May involve managing programs dealing with grant and contribution programs for the work unit.
-Provides national or regional leadership for implementing, reviewing, or and updating of procedures and policies to align with and advance priorities of the Government of Canada in the context of wildlife and habitat conservation.
