Duties

Working in the Surface Branch in Transport Canada’s Ontario Region, Regional Railway Inspectors are responsible for performing oversight activities as they relate to rail safety. Railway Inspectors work with industry to promote compliance with the rail safety regulatory framework and to identify and reduce risks. What you will be doing:

✔ Planning and conducting inspection and audit activities on external stakeholders (such as Railway Companies, Road Authorities, etc.).
✔ Preparing inspection reports and following up on areas of non compliance and concern.
✔ Inspection program planning, reviewing and analyzing technical matters related to requests for interpretation of rules, regulations or standards.
✔ Providing subject matter technical direction, guidance, advice, and interpretation to internal and external stakeholders.

Regional Railway Inspectors have qualifications and extensive operational experience working in the railway industry. They must be skilled communicators capable of working effectively in a multi-disciplinary environment, exercising judgement, and adapting to the different needs of stakeholders. Inspectors must be able to negotiate, facilitate change, and respond effectively to stressful situations. In the course of ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, inspectors carry significant responsibility and accountability as their decisions have a direct impact on the transportation system and safety of the travelling public.

Work environment

The key activities of this position require frequent travel locally, regionally, and sometimes nationally. Typically many work tasks will be performed in an office or telework environment, or in various indoor and outdoor environments and under varying weather conditions.

Various workplace models such as remote work, full-time, part-time or ad-hoc telework or virtual work may be available and will be determined on a case-by-case basis depending on operational feasibility at the time of hiring.

This is an anticipatory process. A pool of qualified candidates may be established and used to staff positions within Transport Canada Surface Branch in Ontario Region. It may also be used to staff other similar positions within Transport Canada.

EX5: Recent and significant* experience in the evaluation of track conditions and compliance with Canadian railway standards as a track inspector or track specialist.
EX6: Recent and significant* experience with the application of Transport Canada's Rules Respecting Track Safety.
EX7: Recent and significant* experience in the inspection and maintenance of railway tracks working with a railway company or in an equivalent field position with a railway contractor.

*Recent and significant experience is defined as having performed a broad range of various and complex activities normally acquired over a period of three (3) years within the last five (5) years.

→ STREAM 2:
EX8: Recent and significant* experience in the evaluation of railway signals and communication systems as a signal maintainer.
EX9: Recent and significant* experience with the application of the Canadian Grade Crossings Regulations.
EX10: Recent and significant* experience in the inspection, testing, and evaluation of railway signal installations or the technical oversight thereof.

*Recent and significant experience is defined as having performed a broad range of various and complex activities normally acquired over a period of three (3) years within the last five (5) years.
