Work environment

Water, Fuel and Environmental Technicians provide water supply, waste water treatment and environmental engineering support to operational units of the Canadian Forces/National Defence.

The primary responsibilities of the Water, Fuel and Environmental Technician are to:

• Install, operate and maintain water treatment and supply systems
• Install, operate and maintain waste water collection and treatment systems
• Set up and monitor various environmental programs
• Produce associated mechanical designs and specifications
• Produce associated mechanical drawings
• Assist other Construction Engineering tradespersons

Water, Fuel and Environmental Technicians often work day or night and must deal with the challenges that come with varying environmental conditions.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill one indeterminate position in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions, with varying tenures in various locations.

Possession of at least one of the following provincially recognized Class 1 (or higher) Operator Certification(s):
Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Treatment or Wastewater Collection

Experience operating and maintaining water distribution or waste water collection systems

Experience operating and maintaining swimming pool equipment

Experience working with the Department of National Defence
Knowledge of pumps and hydraulics
Knowledge of basic lab practices

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be willing to work overtime as operations require, including weekends.
Must be willing to report to afterhours call-ins while on stand-by.
Must be willing and able to travel for training.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• All employees of the core public administration are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless accommodated based on a medical contraindication, religion, or another prohibited ground for discrimination as defined under the Canadian Human Rights Act and attest to their vaccination status.
• Possession of a valid Provincial Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
• Must be willing to wear PPE used in construction and maintenance environment including footwear, respirators and breathing apparatus.
• Must be willing and able to work in physically demanding positions such as confined spaces or heights.
• Must be willing and able to perform physical construction and maintenance actions such as standing, climbing, lifting, bending, grasping, reaching, stooping, color determination, speaking and listening for extended periods.

❗ On October 6, 2021, the Government of Canada announced details of its plans to require vaccination across the federal public service.
