Intent of the process

Casual employment is a temporary form of employment for a maximum of 90 working days per department in a calendar year. A casual worker may not apply to internal job opportunities. Shifts can include evenings, weekends and statutory holidays as well as “as and when required” during the week.

Depending on the position being staffed, any of the following qualifications may be deemed as essential requirements:

Training or certification in Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

Experience providing cleaning services in a commercial, institutional or medical setting.

Experience in food handling practices and techniques in an institutional, commercial or industrial food services operation.

Experience working or volunteering in a mixed civilian and military environment.

Experience in handling cash, performing cashier duties or operating a Point of Sale Terminal (POST).

Knowledge of various types of industrial cleaning equipment and the techniques to operate, clean and maintain them.

Additional qualifications may be required for some positions and you may be contacted and asked to submit information or to be further assessed.

Operational Requirements

Depending upon the position to be staffed one or more of the following requirements may apply or others may be added:

Must be willing and able to work shifts and weekends.
Must be willing and able to work overtime.
Must wear CSA approved safety footwear and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
Must be willing and able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 20 kg.
Must be willing and able to perform a variety of physical tasks for an extended period of time, including but not limited to standing, walking, lifting, bending, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and crawling.
Must be willing and able to work with flammable, corrosive, and/or aerosol soaps, polishes, chemicals, and other cleaning products – including bleach – with the provision of PPE.

On October 6, 2021, the Government of Canada announced details of its plans to require vaccination across the federal public service.
