IMPORTANT COVER LETTER INSTRUCTIONS TO FOLLOW:
Candidates must submit a cover letter (5,000 words or less) providing CONCRETE EXAMPLES WHICH ILLUSTRATE, how they meet the education requirement and the experience factors listed in the essential qualifications and asset education and experience qualifications as well.

1 - Name of the department or organization where the experience was acquired;
2 - Title of the position occupied and duration for which the candidate exercised its functions;
3 - Specific details of tasks, projects or accomplishments demonstrating the experience was acquired.

The Senior Marine Inspector’s duties and responsibilities include the following:
• Inspection of ships for regulatory compliance, seaworthiness, and protection of the marine environment, and issue inspection certificates.
• Investigates a wide variety of accidents, pollution incidents, and alleged infractions of the Canada Shipping Act and Canada Labour Code.
• Acts as project manager on multi-faceted audits/inspections of vessels covering nautical, marine engineering, and naval architecture.
• Approves ship’s plans prior to construction.
• Audits ship safety systems, ship navigation, cargo handling and stowage procedures.
The immediate intent of this process is to staff one English Essential Senior Marine Inspector (TI-07) position on a permanent basis.
The results of this process can be used to staff similar positions with various tenure within Transport Canada.

STREAM 1: NAVAL ARCHITECTURE
ED1: Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in naval architecture.
STREAM 2: MASTER/NAUTICAL
ED2: A secondary school diploma OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience AND possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a Master, Near Coastal or higher.
STREAM 3: MARINE ENGINEERING
ED3: Secondary school diploma OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience; AND possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a Second-class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship) or higher.
EXPERIENCE
For candidates with a university degree, Master Mariner or First Class engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship): Experience normally acquired in TWO (2) years in one or more of the following areas:

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
OC1: Possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a Master Mariner.
OC2: Possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a Master Mariner, valid for use at sea.
OC3: Possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a First-class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship).
OC4: Possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a First-class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship), valid for use at sea.
EXPERIENCE
AEX1: Experience as a master on vessels.
AEX2: Experience as a chief engineer on vessels.
AEX3: Experience as an employer representative or health and safety committee member /representative with respect to the Canada Labour Code Part II or the equivalent provincial health and safety legislation.
AEX4: Experience in the development or implementation of safety management systems.
AEX5: Experience in the development or implementation of quality assurance programs or systems.
AEX6: Experience as a port captain or as an independent surveyor or as a surveyor for classification societies or Protection and Indemnity Clubs (P&I Clubs).
AEX7: Experience in design, construction or repair of commercial vessels or serially produced small vessels.

• Must be willing and able to travel and work overtime on short notice.
• Must possess a valid Canadian driver's license.
• Transport Canada has work locations in areas that may be deemed remote and/or hard to hire. As a result, willingness to relocate to these work locations supports Transport Canada's operational requirements and Transport Canada may provide preference to applicants who express a willingness to relocate to a specific location.
