Duties

The objective is to provide support for the Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) Houses and Communities Division through the development and maintenance of IT tools and software used to deliver Housing programs, the development of standards and regulations and technical support to the ENERGY STAR program.

The senior engineer position requires an excellent knowledge of residential energy efficient housing technologies and practices, building science, as well as familiarity with the Canadian residential construction / renovation industries. Solid communication skills are necessary as well as the ability to translate complex ideas and concepts into accessible language for the lay person. This is a team position with considerable independence, collaborative work and coordination within and with other groups.

The incumbent may lead project teams in the design, development, support and maintenance of residential building energy simulation software tools used in support of government building energy efficiency initiatives and private sector building energy systems design and energy retrofit projects.

Or the incumbent may lead and manage projects or resources in support of standards and regulatory development or of programs that drive improvement in equipment and building energy efficiency.

This may involve: lead a team of building scientists and engineers who specialize in the development of residential building energy simulation software products and services. Manage work schedule and budget. Provide guidance in the design, development, and maintenance of residential simulation software HOT2000. Provide support and guidance to various government and selected private sector groups regarding residential energy simulation, consultation with stakeholders on the development of standards, regulations, etc... Develop project plans in support of Division’s objectives to reduce of the energy consumed, and greenhouse gases emitted, by houses in Canada. Promote the use of Canadian residential energy efficiency in the creation of housing energy codes, product performance standards and building energy use targets both in Canada and abroad. Prepare reports and presentations.

EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, aeronautical engineering, geological engineering, naval architecture or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position, such as building engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering.

Experience
EX1: Significant* experience providing technical advice and recommendations to senior** management.
EX2: Significant* experience in the analysis of data and technical information, and developing and implementing programs or policies.
EX3: Significant* experience in planning, implementing and managing engineering projects which includes activities such as project management, assessment or development of technical projects, providing detailed analysis on projects.

EX5: Significant* experience working on the development or delivery of energy efficiency programs for the building sector or other relevant sectors

*Significant experience will be evaluated in terms of length, complexity and diversity of work experience that was a core part of the candidate’s employment and would have normally been obtained during a period of approximately four (4) years following graduation from an undergraduate engineering program.
