Assessment accommodation

As part of its priority to ensure its workforce truly represents the diversity of Canada, The Department of National Defence (DND) is committed to hiring more Indigenous Peoples into their workforce including at the executive leadership level. Improved representation of Indigenous peoples within the public service will lead to more innovative and inclusive solutions to today’s complex challenges. Indigenous peoples are therefore encouraged to apply to this process and self-identify. As defined in the Canadian Constitution, an Indigenous person is a North American Indian or a member of a First Nation, Métis or Inuit; North American Indian or member of a First Nation including treaty, status or registered Indians, as well as non-status and non-registered Indians.

The Government of Canada continues to be committed to a renewed nation-to-nation relationship with Indigenous peoples based on recognition of rights, respect, co-operation and partnership. The Government of Canada will work closely with provinces, territories, First Nations, the Métis Nation, Inuit groups and church entities to implement recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) and further reconciliation to the benefit of all Canadians.

We are asking all aspiring leaders who identify as an Indigenous person and who are interested in joining the Defence Team to present their candidacy through this staffing process. Achieving greater representation of Indigenous peoples within our executive community will strengthen the Defence institution for all Canadians.

The term “Aboriginal” is sometimes used within this job advertisement as it relates to the Employment Equity Act and other legislative frameworks. The term “Indigenous” is used, where feasible, in support of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

All eligible candidacies will be screened on essential experience and advised of their results in early January 2022. All candidates who are deemed to meet the essential experience qualifications will then be invited to an online interview to be held starting the end of January 2022. All candidates’ correspondence will be done via e-mail.

Duties

As a Director within the Defence Team, you will have the responsibility to manage a portfolio/program of work and the delivery of DND services across Canada. You will play a central role in working with other federal partners, supporting the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and in identifying and implementing innovative solutions to meet their demands for service across many DND business lines, and you will play a key role in managing relationships with stakeholders such as other levels of government, groups and industry. As one of Canada’s largest Federal Departments we have executive opportunities that cover a wide range of leadership areas including but not limited to – Human Resources, Planning, Information Management, Finance, Communications and Policy.

Work environment

Together, DND and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) create the largest, most complex organization in Canada. DND's role is to provide services and support to the CAF in their operations and missions at home and abroad. DND and the CAF work side-by-side to fulfill the Government of Canada’s mission to defend Canada and Canadians and contribute to international peace, security and stability efforts.

In all areas of our business, each one of us has a role in supporting the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in operations and contributing towards the successful delivery of the Defence Policy: Strong, Secure, and Engaged. The Department has multiple operational practices intersecting with Indigenous interests. These include, but are not limited to: land and waterway access; employment and recruitment; land remediation; real property transactions and Indigenous procurement.

The Public Service Employment Act (PSEA) states: "Canada will continue to gain from a public service that strives for excellence, that is representative of Canada's diversity and that is able to serve the public with integrity and in their official language of choice." Diverse perspectives and approaches contribute to better programs and stronger policy advice for the benefit of all Canadians. The public service, as an employer, cannot afford to overlook the strategic opportunity provided by a diverse labor pool. Given the demographics, the next decade is an opportunity for the public service to renew itself.

Looking ahead – under the BEYOND2020 Public Service renewal framework, we will adopt mindsets and behaviors that will meet the changing expectations of Canadians. The desired outcome is a Public Service that is more AGILE, more INCLUSIVE, and better EQUIPPED. We will continue to move ahead with purpose and intention, making decisions that reflect our values and that position our organization and all those who belong in it—for a successful future.

Indigenous members of the Defence Team represent the country’s rich diversity and make valuable contributions to our peace and security in an uncertain world. The CAF and the entire Defence Team remain committed to fostering an inclusive work environment for Indigenous people, where dignity, respect, and fairness are embraced and valued.
