Work environment

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Ontario and Prairie region is planning to hire 2 diagnostic laboratory technicians. These technicians will be joining a team engaged in diagnostic testing in support of the National Aquatic Animal Health Program at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, MB. The FWI Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory is accredited to ISO 17025.

Intent of the process

Through this hiring process the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will be staffing 2 positions located in Winnipeg, MB. A pool of qualified candidates will be created and may be used to staff similar positions in Winnipeg, MB with various tenures.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

For both EG-04 & EG-05:
Graduation with a degree, diploma, or certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in a field of natural, physical, or applied science relevant to the duties of the position, OR an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.

Degree equivalency

For both EG-04 & EG-05:
Experience providing technical support for laboratory projects in one of the following areas: animal health, genomics or molecular biology
Experience in the collection and management of samples or data.
Experience operating and maintaining lab equipment
Experience in analyzing and interpreting data.

For the EG-05 level only:
Experience planning logistics and managing independent work teams for technical support in laboratory projects.
Experience developing technology or methodologies.
Experience giving technical advice to internal or external clients

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

For both EG-04 & EG-05:
Experience in the use of computer software for analyses of data, preparation of graphical output, and report preparation.
Experience working in an ISO/IEC or other Accredited Laboratory
Experience in aquatic animal health scientific laboratory techniques, including molecular genetics techniques, virology, or bacteriology
Experience working in a lab environment using genomics or biotechnology including RNA or DNA extraction or amplification
Experience working in a lab environment using liquid handling robots
Experience working in a biocontainment workspace
