Intent of the process

This process will be initially used to staff one indeterminate position in Winnipeg, MB. The selection process may be used to staff similar positions at these groups and levels with various linguistic profiles and security requirements, conditions of employment for various future permanent and/or temporary vacancies within the Public Health Agency of Canada National Microbiology Laboratory sites across Canada.

As the classification level and salary will be determined by the qualifications of the candidate, please refer to the salary scale below:
SE-RES-01: $60,333 to $81,758
SE-RES-02: $74,914 to $115,585
SE-RES-03: $94,675 to $128,304
SE-RES-04: $113,381 to $142,418

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION:
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in biological sciences with specialization related to duties of the position, such as vector biology/ecology, molecular biology, or microbiology

Degree equivalency

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE:
*Significant experience with scientific research in the area of zoonotic diseases especially those that are transmitted by arthropods.
*Significant experience in scientific research related to molecular diagnostics and serological assays for vector-borne pathogens.
*Significant experience with collaborative research with universities and/or government organizations.
Experience in leading, organizing and delivery of scientific projects in a laboratory setting.
Experience with writing and publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals and delivering presentations at scientific meetings (Productivity/Recognition).

*Significant experience refers to an acceptable combination of breadth, depth and complexity of tasks that can normally be acquired over a period of three (3) years or more

ASSET EXPERIENCE:
Experience in field collection of arthropods and processing samples for molecular detection or isolation of vector-borne pathogens.
Experience working in a CL3 environment.
Experience with maintaining and/or rearing arthropods under laboratory conditions.
Experience in developing successful scientific research proposals for funding opportunities including those with partners within Canada and internationally.
Experience in mentoring and training staff.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Willingness and ability to work full time and five days a week.
Willingness and ability to provide assistance with outbreak and emergency laboratory response situations, which may require working overtime and/or weekends.
Willingness and ability to travel across Canada and when required internationally in order to participate in meetings, training and potential outbreak and emergency response.
Willingness and ability to work in a CL3 environment.

Knowledge of laboratory biosafety regulations and procedures in CL2 and CL3 facilities.
Knowledge of trends and emerging issues relating to human illnesses in the context of One-health.
Knowledge of PHAC’s mandate, surveillance and outbreak detection and response systems.
