Intent of the process

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of Earth Sciences.

Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).
Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
- Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
- Operational research and scientific analysis;
- Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.

Degree equivalency

Experience developing research projects, including implementation and delivering scientific results, in the field of isotope geochemistry or geochronology as applied to crustal geological or mineral deposit studies;
Experience presenting research results to the scientific community through oral presentations and publications in recognized scientific journals;
Significant experience* in performing isotopic analyses using thermal ionization or multi-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometers;
Experience preparing geological samples for isotopic analysis in an environmentally-controlled clean laboratory.
*Significant experience means independent operation and tuning of mass spectrometers gained over a period of at least two years, within the last five years.

Knowledge of analytical techniques and applications of thermal ionization or multi-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometers in the Earth Sciences,
Knowledge of the theories and principles of isotope geochemistry and geochronology.
Knowledge of methods for data analysis and assessment of isotopic data.
Knowledge of geochemical and mineralogical methods and their application in integrated isotopic studies.
Knowledge of geological principles and their interpretation.

Ability to conduct research studies as an isotope geochemist/geochronologist specialist member of multidisciplinary teams of earth scientists.
Ability to develop new research approaches and novel analytical methodologies in the field of thermal ionization or multi-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry.
Ability to lead research within a laboratory.
Ability to supervise activities and staff in a laboratory setting.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Graduation with a PhD from a recognized post-secondary institution in the field of Earth Sciences with a specialization in isotope geochemistry.

Degree equivalency

Experience applying statistical analysis to research problems.
Experience with data management.
Experience maintaining and troubleshooting mass spectrometric instrumentation.
Experience conducting geological field studies.
