Intent of the process

The intention of this selection process is to fill two (2) indeterminate (permanent) positions, one in Montreal, Quebec and the other in Burlington, Ontario.

A pool of partially or fully qualified candidates will be established and could be used to staff similar or identical positions with various tenures (permanent or temporary) and various linguistics requirements in Edmonton (Alberta), Vancouver (British Columbia), Moncton (New Brunswick), Burlington (Ontario), Ottawa (Ontario), Montréal (Quebec) or Saskatoon (Saskatchewan).

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education:

A diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in chemistry, toxicology, or in an equivalent subject area directly related to the duties of the position, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience

Degree equivalency

Experience:

Significant and recent experience* in conducting standard and complex chemical or toxicological analyses, as applied to samples for trace inorganic or organic contaminants, or toxicological effects

*Significant and recent experience is defined as experience of at least three (3) years gained in the past five years.

Ability:

Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in a science-related field

Degree equivalency

Recent experience** working in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited analytical laboratory

Significant experience*** in set-up, calibration, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of specialized analytical instruments

Significant experience*** performing organic analyses on environmental samples

Significant experience*** performing inorganic analyses on environmental samples

Significant experience*** performing toxicological testing on environmental samples

Significant experience*** in working with aquatic living organisms (bacteria, algae, fish, shellfish, etc.)

Significant experience*** in the use of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

**Recent experience is defined as the depth and breadth of work-related experience that would normally have been gained performing the duties for a period of approximately one (1) year in a domain relevant to the position within the last three years.

Ability to maintain and troubleshoot the performance of laboratory equipment and instruments

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

o Able and willing to work overtime on weeknights and weekends.
o Able and willing to travel off site occasionally to attend vendor workshops and/or training seminars/conferences
o Able to lift 20 kg in the performance of their duties
o Able to work for extensive hours under a chemical fume hood, with occasional organic solvent vapours and constant noise.
o Able to work in a standing position for extensive hours.
o Known allergies should be controlled by the use of an acceptable device (eg dust mask) or medication; they must not interfere with the performance of the work.
o Able to work occasionally with a chemical respiratory mask.

Asset qualifications may be used in the screening process. Therefore candidates must clearly demonstrate in their application which of the asset criteria for education and experience they possess.

Depending on the number of applicants, the needs and/or Human Resources plans, volume management strategies such as random selection, top-down approach and/or establishing cut-off scores to determine who will continue in the staffing process, may be used for the purpose of managing applications.

Several methods of assessment may be used to assess potential candidates (written exam, interview, reference check, etc.). Please note that any information provided through this selection process may be considered in the assessment of any of the essential or other qualifications, including the ability to communicate effectively in writing.
