The Geoscience Database Specialist (GDS) is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining computer software programs using Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat approved computer-coding languages to support Programs/Projects.
The GDS is responsible for providing subject matter expertise as it relates to database design, development and maintenance. These databases are required to follow all Government of Canada (GoC) directives by enforcing database policies, procedures and standards. Databases are to be developed in accordance with end-user requirements and follow all relevant geoscience data management principles.
The GDS is required to support seamless flow of geoscience data that considers both backend data structure and frontend accessibility for end-users, while achieving acceptable user defined performance.
The GDS will minimize downtime and manage parameters to provide efficient query responses while performing regular database evaluations to ensure data integrity and security.
The GDS is required to regularly update their existing skillsets and knowledge to match current advancements in computer programming languages while taking learned concepts and applying them to other problems.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS - candidates MUST meet each essential qualification to be considered:
►A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization* in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position (i.e. computer science, geographic information systems, etc.).
* The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.
Experience:
► Significant* experience in designing, developing, and maintaining software applications using program language(s) (i.e. C#, Javascript, HTML, Pascal, Python, Visual Basic, Perl script, etc.).
► Significant* experience in using SQL and SQL procedural language.
► Significant* experience in developing one or more data models and designing one or more database management systems.
► Significant* work experience managing geoscience data.
► Experience using extract, transform, load (ETL) tool(s) to integrate data into a databases.
*Significant means: at least 3 years experience within the last 5 years.
Education:
► An additional degree or a diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in geoinformatics, geographic information systems, computer science or other field of science related to the position.
Experience:
► Experience identifying, recommending and integrating emerging trends and technologies such as, Cloud, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, etc.
► Experience in analysis and synthesis of spatially enabled geoscience data.
► Experience effectively communicating technical or scientific database concepts to non-subject matter experts.
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
►Willing and able to work long periods of sustained attention to a computer screen.
