Duties

Recalls Officers are automotive inspectors designated by the Minister of Transport under section 14 of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. They are responsible for overseeing recalls of vehicles, tires and child car seats. Key duties include:

• Reviewing recall notices issued by manufacturers, importers and distributors;
• Posting recalls in Transport Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database;
• Assessing the adequacy of recall repairs and the methods used to contact owners of affected products;
• Verifying compliance with recall requirements, such as recall completion rate reporting;
• Providing information and clarifications to companies about regulatory requirements;
• Answering consumer recall enquiries.

If Recalls Officers believe that a safety recall fails to address public risk or that a company’s recall actions are inadequate, they may recommend harm mitigation measures. They may also recommend enforcement actions if non-compliance with the Act is detected.

We are looking to staff the position of Recalls Officer. Recalls Officers are part of Transport Canada’s Defect Investigations and Recalls Division. This Division is responsible for conducting investigations into alleged or suspected safety-related defects associated with the design, construction or functioning of vehicles, tires or child car seats. This Division is also responsible for overseeing recalls of vehicles, tires or child car seats. We work closely with manufacturers, consumers, dealers, forensic scientists and others.

Transport Canada’s Defect Investigations and Recalls Division is based at the Motor Vehicle Safety Investigation Laboratory in the National Capital Region and, specifically, in the Hull sector of Gatineau, Quebec. The laboratory, a state-of-the-art, best-kept-secret facility, is a stone’s throw from a major highway, 8 km from Parliament Hill and against traffic congestion. Express and regular bus routes stops, including service to and from downtown Ottawa, are within walking distance. Our facility backs onto the Trans-Canada nature trails and bike paths and offers free parking to employees.

The intent of this job opportunity Advertisement is for an indeterminate position GT-04 with a linguistic profile: English essential located in the National Capital Region (NCR) in Gatineau. A pool of partially qualified candidates may be established within Transport Canada and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures (including indeterminate / term / assignment / secondment/ acting/ deployment) and/or various linguistic requirements (bilingual imperative CBC/CBC; BBB/BBB, and English essential) and/or various security profiles (reliability, secret).

• EX2: Experience reviewing and analyzing technical documents/information such as, but not limited to, technical service bulletins, customer satisfaction programs, warranty, field reports, etc.

• EX3: Experience in establishing and maintaining healthy working relationships with internal and external stakeholders (such as industry representatives and colleagues).

• EX4: Experience writing technical reports and business correspondence.

• EX5: Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
