Duties

• Assists in the lifting, placing and the maintenance of floating and fixed aids to navigation, such as cleaning, painting, general site upkeep and repairs, carpentry, concrete and other construction work.
• Assists in the launching, recovery and manning of small boats in support of the ship's assigned tasks.
• Assists in loading, stowing, securing and discharging of cargo and supplies, and in delivering equipment and stores ashore.
• Assists in Search and Rescue (of persons or ships in distress or in difficulty), Environmental Response, Icebreaking, Scientific, Hydrographic, and Fisheries operations, and administers first aid as appropriate.
• On Small Vessels Fleet and at facilities: Plans ship’s menu, modifies menus to meet dietary and/or special needs of individuals. Prepares and cooks all food, ensuring standards of food safety and sanitation are met

Valid Marine Emergency Duties certificate STCW Basic Safety [A1 & B2] and Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats [B1] OR Valid MED Refresher - Marine Basic Safety and Proficiency in Survival Craft (STCW BS and PSC)
AND
Valid Transport Canada STCW endorsed Bridgewatch Rating Certificate

Experience as a deckhand onboard a fishing vessel.

Experience as a Leading Deckhand/Lifeboatman on a Coast Guard vessel in Small Vessel Fleet in the following programs:
• Search and Rescue
• Conservation and Protection

Experience as a Deckhand or Leading Deckhand on a Coast Guard Large Vessel Fleet

Valid Food Safety Training

Successful completion of Canadian Coast Guard training in one or more of the following areas:
• Small Craft Training
• RHIOT
• Rescue Specialist
• Basic Oil Spill Response Course

Conditions of employment

• Reliability security clearance
• Valid Health Canada medical for seagoing personnel
• Maintain a valid Certificate of Competency
• Requirement to go to sea for prolonged periods of time and in adverse weather conditions
• Requirement to travel by air, land or by sea
• Requirement to wear and maintain a uniform, safety footwear, and personal protective equipment to Canadian Coast Guard standards
• Required to work overtime when required
• Willingness to be deployed within the Atlantic Region
• Compliance with the CCG Safety Management System and Standards
• Adherence to the Canadian Coast Guard Respiratory Protection Program
• For vessels assigned primarily to Search and Rescue operations, employees must be- within 30 minutes response time to the vessel during assigned work period
• Valid Canadian Passport (for identified positions)
• All employees of the core public administration are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and attest to their vaccination status unless accommodated based on a medical contraindication, religion, or another prohibited ground for discrimination as defined under the Canadian Human Rights Act.

On October 6, 2021, the Government of Canada announced details of its plans to require vaccination across the federal public service.

As per the new Policy on COVID-19 Vaccination for the Core Public Administration Including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, federal public servants in the Core Public Administration and members of the RCMP must attest to their vaccination status. The requirement for employees to be fully vaccinated applies whether they are teleworking, working remotely or working on-site. This is a condition of employment and it applies to indeterminate (permanent), determinate (term), casual, and student hiring. Salary for SC-DED-02- $57,576 per year
Salary for SC-DED-03- $59,436 per year

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
