Duties

The Science Advisor III positions provide science advice to policy and decision-makers on a variety of topics ranging from fish stock assessment, species at risk and aquatic invasive species to marine mammals, aquatic habitat and freshwater science. They support the development, implementation, delivery and oversight of national DFO Science programs in the Fish Population Science, Marine Mammals Science, and Environment and Biodiversity Science branches.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent is to fill various vacancies in positions located in Ottawa, Ontario.

A pool of fully and/or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions, within Fisheries and Oceans Canada in the National Capital Region with various language requirements, security requirements and tenures.

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
1) Experience* conducting scientific work, scientific research, scientific information analysis or modeling analysis related to the conservation or management of species or ecosystems.
2) Experience* evaluating scientific results and communicating scientific issues or findings to non-experts.
3) Experience* developing and writing scientific analysis or guidance or science advice related to the conservation or management of species or ecosystems for stakeholders, managers or other scientists.
4) Experience* coordinating science projects, science programs or science initiatives related to the conservation or management of species or ecosystems.

* Experience is understood to mean the depth and breadth of the experience in the workplace normally associated with having performed a broad range of various, complex related activities for at least two (2) years within the past five (5) years.

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of aquatic species and ecosystems.

ABILITIES:
1) Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
2) Ability to communicate effectively orally.
3) Ability to analyze complex science information and issues and provide advice and recommendations.
4) Ability to evaluate scientific research proposals.
5) Ability to work independently.

Information on employment equity
