Work environment

Presently with the Covid-19 pandemic situation, some Transport Canada staff have been working from home. However, there are positions that require a physical presence in our Transport Canada Centres.

Work situations will be revisited post-pandemic.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent of this process is to fill 1 CS 01 position in Calgary, Alberta on a permanent basis.

Applicants should be aware that a pool of qualified candidates (fully assessed or partially assessed) may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Calgary, Alberta, and Edmonton, Alberta. In addition, this process may be used for various tenures (acting, indeterminate and term), security requirements and conditions of employment within Transport Canada. As a result of the potential and possible use of the selection process and subsequent pool by hiring managers, we encourage all employees seeking this type of opportunity to apply.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Completion of a minimum 2 year diploma or degree from an acceptable post-secondary educational program in computer science, information technology, information management or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed.

Notes:
1. Indeterminate period incumbents of positions in the CS group on May 10, 1999, who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standards based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the CS group.

2. It is the recognized educational institution (e.g. community college, CÉGEP or university) that determines if the courses taken by a candidate correspond to two years of a post-secondary program at the institution.

Degree equivalency

Experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and upgrading hardware and software in a Microsoft environment and for a large organization*.

* "Large Organization” means a multidisciplinary organization usually composed of more than 200 employees.

Experience providing on-site and/or telephone information technology (IT) support services to clients in a formal capacity (e.g., as a member of an IT team providing onsite support; a service centre, etc.).

Experience in providing advice to clients on IT matters.

Experience using a problem/ticket management system.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Be able and willing to work occasionally outside normal working hours and weekends.

The job requires transporting, lifting and setting down equipment that can weigh up to 20kg.

The job requires working under the following conditions: bending down, being hunched over and stretching below desks to reach the equipment.

Be able and willing to travel within the Prairie and Northern Region as part of your duties.

ASSESSMENT - GENERAL INFORMATION
Random selection, invoking asset qualifications may be used in conjunction with other volume management strategies that can be applied at any stage in the staffing process.

Reference checks may be sought.

An interview will be administered.

A test may be administered.

Candidates will be required to provide proof of education as part of this selection process.

REFERENCE CHECKS
Those selected for assessment should be prepared to provide the names and contact information of recent references (recent is defined as within the last 2 years)

References must be available, have an in-depth knowledge of your work/projects, and must be able to answer specific questions pertaining to your experience, achievements and strengths.

References that are not reachable and/or not available are lowering the candidates’ chances to be found fully qualified and be considered for appointment. When providing names of references, it is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure they are available to respond in a timely manner.

AVAILABILITY
The assessment may be administered outside of regular working hours including evenings and weekends. If you are unavailable, you must inform us immediately as each request will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Supporting documentation will be required.

RESCHEDULING
Rescheduling will only be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Supporting documentation will be required at the time of your request to be rescheduled.
Possible reasons for alternate assessment dates:
· Medical reason with doctor's certificate;
· Death in the immediate family;
· Professional obligation (proof required);
· Confirmation of pre-approved travel plans; or
· Religious reasons.

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
