Work environment

The Manitoba Regional Office (MRO) is responsible for federal prosecutions throughout the province of Manitoba. The regional headquarters is in Winnipeg, and the office provides legal advice and prosecution services at more than 65 provincial court circuit points, superior court in six cities and towns, and the Manitoba Court of Appeal in Winnipeg.

The majority of the files handled in the MRO involved Controlled Drugs and Substances Act offences, ranging from low-complexity matters to prosecutions of sophisticated criminal organizations. The remaining files involved regulatory and economic crimes such as tax evasion, cross-border smuggling and immigration offences, environmental and wildlife offences, and offences relating to the health and safety of Canadians generally.

Intent of the process

As a Legal Assistant at the PPSC, you will be exposed to various areas of criminal law, such as, drug prosecutions, organized crime, and regulatory offences. You will work in dynamic teams consisting of Team Leaders, Counsel, and Paralegals all working towards common goals.

This is an excellent opportunity to get hands-on experience working with prosecutors within the overall context of large, complex criminal prosecutions.

We have an immediate need to staff one indeterminate CR-04, Legal Assistant Trainee and four indeterminate CR-05, Legal Assistant positions.

Experience:
Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, or Excel).

Asset Qualification - Education:
- A diploma or certificate in a law-related program from a recognized post-secondary institution (e.g. legal assistant, law clerk, paralegal assistant program or an equivalent program).

Degree equivalency

CR-04 Legal Assistant Trainee / CR-05 Legal Assistant
Asset Qualification - Experience:
- Experience providing clerical support services (such as maintaining and updating files, reviewing and formatting documents).

CR-05 Legal Assistant
Asset Qualification - Experience:
- Experience providing clerical support services in a legal environment (such as maintaining and updating files, reviewing and formatting documents).
