Duties

As an Engagement Officer, your duties will include supporting consultation or engagement activities regarding scientific research with Indigenous peoples, specifically in remote and northern communities. The position requires frequent (monthly) travel to remote northern communities, on small aircraft and requires flexibility to work overtime on evenings, weekends and holidays to accommodate Indigenous communities and the logistics of travel to communities that do not have direct flights. Travel could take place in northern Quebec, Labrador, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, the Yukon, northern British Columbia, northern Manitoba, northern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan and northern Ontario. Travel to Northern Canada is frequently concentrated in the winter months. Travels delays are frequent occurrences in these regions and Engagement Officers are often required to quickly adapt travel plans due to adverse weather conditions or changes to communities’ plans.

As an Engagement Officer, you will need to be able to adapt to these unforeseen circumstances and be able to travel on your own in areas where accessibility standards can be different than in large Canadian cities, including staying in hostel-style shared accommodations, and preparing meals. A condition of employment is being able and willing to follow public health guidelines on vaccinations and testing for tuberculosis when travelling to certain regions of Canada’s North, have a valid drivers licence (you will be called upon to drive on remote highways in adverse weather conditions that are not paved ) and be able and willing to work overtime frequently on short notice by yourself. In addition, the employer will require that you take and maintain wilderness first aid and predator defense training, which will be provided by the employer.

Work environment

If you are an outdoor enthusiast, seeking adventure, and love to travel and meet new people, this job might be for you. Come and join us and have an experience that most will never be able to have and travel throughout Northern Canada to help the Geological Survey of Canada advance its mandate on geoscience for Canadians and in the process contribute to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

A successful Engagement Officer is comfortable working independently, and as a member of an interdisciplinary team. The position requires an individual with strong research and critical thinking skills, and the ability to develop the specialized knowledge set. The work environment is busy, and personal initiative and intellectual curiosity are greatly beneficial qualities.

At the Geological Survey of Canada, we pride ourselves in being an organization that not only provides valuable geoscience to Canadians; we are also on the ground working throughout Canada. As a result our relationships with the communities throughout areas where we conduct our research is very important to us and at the forefront of our work.
