Intent of the process

Indeterminate appointments resulting from this process will be made under the Justice Canada LP-01 Training and Development Program. This program provides for the progression of participants from LP-00 (articling student) to LP-02 (counsel) over approximately 5 years. As such, it is expected that an initial indeterminate appointment to this program would ultimately result in an indeterminate non-advertised LP-02 appointment (subject to meeting all program requirements).

The Department has a significant number of vacancies to fill.

Common Law or Civil Law degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Degree equivalency

Experience gained within approximately the last three years providing legal services (i.e. working on legal or legal policy matters) as a lawyer, articling student or law clerk to a judge.

Bachelor degree (B.A.) or post-graduate studies in a specialized discipline or within an area of law relevant for the position being staffed.

Degree equivalency

A minimum of six (6) months experience working as a lawyer, law clerk or articling student in one or more of the following areas of Canadian law: aboriginal law, administrative law, civil litigation, class actions, commercial law, constitutional law, criminal law, Crown law, public law, eDiscovery, environmental law, extradition law, files involving the General Anti-Avoidance Rule, files relating to transfer-pricing issues, human rights law, immigration law, labour and employment law, mutual legal assistance, national security law, police law, procurement law, real property law, federal real property transactions, tax law, tort law, collection actions, bankruptcy and insolvency.

Experience with negotiations or other dispute resolution processes.

Experience in conducting legal research.

Experience working in a Northern and cross-cultural environment (for positions in the Northern Regional Office).

Experience in litigation.

Operational Requirements:
The following requirements can be accommodated based on a persons' needs or status.

Willing and able to work extended hours including weekends.

Willing to travel as required and for extended periods of time.

Possession of a valid driver’s license or willingness to obtain one (for positions in the Atlantic Regional Office).

Conditions of employment

Security clearance (according to the position Enhanced Reliability, Secret, Top Secret)

Membership in good standing of the law Society of a province or territory of Canada where the work is located.

Medical Clearance (for positions in the Northern Regional Office).

For immigration work in the Quebec Regional Office: Periodically available on call after hours for immigration stand-by duty.

For immigration and extradition work in the Ontario Regional Office: Periodically available on call after hours for immigration or extradition stand-by duty.
