Work environment

Presently with the Covid-19 pandemic situation, some Transport Canada staff have been working entirely remotely. However, there are positions that require a physical presence in our Transport Canada Centres.

Remote work situations will be revisited post-pandemic.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent of this process is to fill 1 AS-04 position in Winnipeg, Manitoba on a permanent basis. Relocation assistance may be available.

Applicants should be aware that a pool of qualified candidates (fully assessed or partially assessed) may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level. In addition, this process may be used for various tenures (acting, indeterminate and term), security requirements and conditions of employment within Transport Canada. In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Recent and significant experience* in managing activities related to an occupational health and safety (OHS) program.
Experience in providing OHS advice and recommendations to stakeholders and workplace OHS committees or representatives in the implementation of an OHS program.
Experience in researching, analyzing and interpreting legislation, policies and/or directives.

*Recent and significant experience means the depth and breadth of experience normally acquired over approximately two (2) years within the last five (5) years.
Experience gained solely as a member of an OHS committee is not sufficient.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Successful completion of two years of an acceptable post-secondary educational program in a field related to OHS.

Degree equivalency

Professional designation in OHS.

Experience in conducting workplace health and safety investigations and inspections.
Experience in providing ergonomic advice or services.
Experience working with union representatives.
Experience in delivering orientation, awareness, or training sessions to groups of various sizes.

The conduct of investigations and audits may require climbing ladders, entering confined spaces, boarding ships and flying in aircraft. It also may involve working in small watercraft and accessing remote locations. There may be a requirement to wear a variety of personal protective equipment (sometimes heavy and cumbersome), such as respirators, PFD, hearing protection, safety lines and harnesses. Working under these conditions is a minimal requirement of the job.
There is an occasional requirement to stand for extended periods when conducting site inspections, and delivering briefings, information or training sessions.

ASSESSMENT - GENERAL INFORMATION
Random selection, invoking asset qualifications may be used in conjunction with other volume management strategies that can be applied at any stage in the staffing process.
Reference checks may be sought.

An interview will be administered.

A test may be administered.

Candidates will be required to provide proof of education as part of this selection process.

REFERENCE CHECKS
Those selected for assessment should be prepared to provide the names and contact information of recent references (recent is defined as within the last 2 years):

References must be available, have an in-depth knowledge of your work/projects, and must be able to answer specific questions pertaining to your experience, achievements and strengths.

References that are not reachable and/or not available are lowering the candidates’ chances to be found fully qualified and be considered for appointment. When providing names of references, it is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure they are available to respond in a timely manner.

AVAILABILITY
The assessment may be administered outside of regular working hours including evenings and weekends. If you are unavailable, you must inform us immediately as each request will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Supporting documentation will be required.

RESCHEDULING
Rescheduling will only be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Supporting documentation will be required at the time of your request to be rescheduled.
Possible reasons for alternate assessment dates:
· Medical reason with doctor's certificate;
· Death in the immediate family;
· Professional obligation (proof required);
· Confirmation of pre-approved travel plans; or
· Religious reasons.
