Duties

This position is responsible for:
• Developing and maintaining the Canadian Grain Commission reference collection of insects.
• Maintenance and updating of stored-product information on the Canadian Grain Commissions web page.
• Insect imaging for use in creation of digital tools to assist in identification of stored-product insects.
• Training of CGC, other government organizations and industry staff on how to identify stored-product insects.
• Participating in and initiating research projects.
• Maintenance and upkeep of stored-product insect laboratory.
• Presentation of stored-product information for scientific meetings, industry groups, extension meetings and public relation purposes.
• Ensuring data collected from program sources and documentation is accurate and current.

The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is a federal department responsible to ensure the integrity and marketability of grain for the domestic and international grain trade, from producer to global customer.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff one (1) indeterminate position.

A pool may be created to staff similar positions with various linguistic profiles and tenures (indeterminate, specified term, acting, deployment, secondment).

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education:
• Graduation with a Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in entomology or a related discipline (i.e. ecology, agricultural sciences) or an acceptable combination of education and experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Experience with morphological examination of insects, including handling, pinning, labelling of specimens.
• Experience planning and conducting entomological research including but not limited to: making observations, preparing data sheets, recording data accurately, analyzing data and interpreting results.
• Experience with insect sampling techniques and using taxonomic keys for identification.
• Experience following protocols for insect sampling, rearing, or care.

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of insect biology, morphology and insect identification/preparation/preservation techniques.
• Knowledge of theory and practice of stored-product entomology and integrated pest management.

• Ability to utilize equipment used to manipulate insects.

• Graduation with a M.Sc. degree from a recognized university with specialization in a field related to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Recent experience working in terminal elevators.
• Experience mentoring and supervising others.
• Experience establishing and maintaining insect colonies.
• Experience contributing to the preparation of research reports and posters.

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of terminal elevators and grain handling system in Canada.
