Duties

Transport Canada Rail Safety is looking for motivated engineers to join its infrastructure team. Transport Canada provides excellent work-life balance conditions as well as opportunities for professional development and career advancement. Be part of a challenging and dynamic work environment!

Duties include but not limited to:
-Provide advice, guidance and interpretation of relevant Railway Safety Act, Rules, Regulations, Standards and Guidelines on railway infrastructure (track and/or bridges) matters.
-Provide detailed technical advice to regional railway safety inspectors on engineering and regulatory matters.
-Lead technical working groups to ensure continuous improvement of inspection programs, regulatory instruments and best practices.
-Manage a variety of projects to support rail safety’s mandate.

Intent of the process

The position being staffed has a linguistic profile of Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB. However, a pool of partially or fully qualified candidates may be established to staff similar or identical positions with various tenures (determinate or indeterminate) or different linguistic profiles (Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB or English Essential), which may vary according to the position being staffed.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education
ED: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in either civil engineering, geological engineering, mechanical engineering or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification
OC: Eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada with specialization in an engineering specialty relevant to the position (please see note 1).

Note 1: “Eligibility for certification as a Professional Engineer” means candidates must demonstrate he or she is eligible for the certification. This is mandatory for the EN-ENG-04 Position

Experience

All Streams :
EX1: Experience in leading individuals to achieve common work objectives (project leader).
EX2: Experience in project management (project manager).
EX3: Experience in managing relationships with stakeholder representatives.
EX4: Experience in providing technical advice to management (preferably executive level), such as briefing notes, presentations and other types of relevant communications.

Stream 1 (Bridge):
EX5: Engineering experience in road or railway bridges as it relates to the design, inspection or maintenance of road or railway bridges.

Stream 2 (Infrastructure - Track):
EX6: Engineering experience in railway infrastructures management as it relates at minimum, to one of the following elements:
• track design,
• monitoring/inspection,
• measurement and evaluation through automated systems or,
• maintenance / construction.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Education
AED1: A post graduate degree in a specialty relevant to the duties of the position.
AED2: Certification in a domain related to the job.

Degree equivalency

Experience
AEX1: Experience in the development of rules, regulations or standards.
AEX2: Experience in engineering work relating to geological hazards management or monitoring in the road or railway sector.
AEX3: Experience applying regulations, rules, standards, guidelines, and best practices as they pertain to the construction, maintenance or design of railway tracks.
AEX4: Experience applying regulations, rules, standards, guidelines, and best practices as they pertain to the construction, maintenance or design of road or railway bridges.
AEX5: Experience in implementing, operating or managing technologies and automated systems to monitor railway infrastructure (track or bridges).

- Physical Environment: this position may require, on occasion, physical effort to climb railway structures, equipment or facilities on sites where the access is difficult and the terrain is rugged.
- Must be willing and able to complete the necessary technical training required for the position.
- Ability and willingness to travel at short notice by all modes of transportation.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime when necessary
