Duties

As junior or intermediate project technologists, you will be responsible to develop technical statements of work for installation of new equipment or ship systems design; to propose new changes to existing ship structure and system in accordance with Canadian and international regulations to meet CCG operational requirements; to manage and update vessels drawings and technical documentation using various CAD software from information gathered from stakeholders and vessel visits to capture as fitted changes; to create refit test and inspection plans; to contribute to developing new business rules, technical standards and best practices across the CCG community and to provide technical solutions to complex projects during vessel refit and dry docking.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to create a fully or partially qualified list of candidates which may be used to staff similar vacancies at this level within the Canadian Coast Guard, Atlantic Region.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION:

Graduation with a diploma, from a recognized post-secondary institution, with specialization in Naval Architecture or Marine Systems Design (i.e. Technology/Technologist).

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

Experience required for both Junior Project Technologists (EG-05) and Intermediate Project Technologists (EG-06):

Experience reviewing and preparing documents such as specifications, Statements of Work, Technical Statements of Requirements, drawings and cost estimates for engineering projects or initiatives.

Experience applying/using Transport Canada, SOLAS and Class Regulations.

Experience required for Junior Project Technologists (EG-05):

At least one (1) year of experience providing technologists support services including analyzing issues, assessing impacts and developing options or solutions in a marine design, construction or refit environment.

At least one (1) year of experience using AutoCAD 2010 (or later) to generate detailed Structural, Mechanical or Electrical 2D drawings.

Experience required for Intermediate Project Technologists (EG-06):

At least two (2) years of experience providing technologists support services including analyzing issues, assessing impacts and developing options or solutions in a marine design, construction or refit environment.

At least three (3) years of experience using AutoCAD 2010 (or later) to generate detailed Structural, Mechanical or Electrical 2D drawings.

Knowledge of configuration management fundamentals and associated processes.

ABILITES:
Ability to communicate effectively (both oral and written communication will be assessed).
Ability to use Word Processing (e.g. Microsoft Word) and Drawing Software Program such as TIFF, PDF or AutoCAD.
Ability to gather and interpret information from technical drawings commonly used in the marine industry.

EDUCATION/OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATIONS:

Completion of a training program in project management (i.e. certificate or diploma) OR project management professional (PMP) certified designation.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

Experience providing technical expertise and advice for the assessment of vessel construction projects, vessel refits or vessel work periods.

Experience in producing ship or vessel structural drawings.

Experience in producing drawings for electrical systems, including block diagrams and, schematics.

Experience in producing drawings for mechanical systems, including block diagrams and, schematics.

Experience in analyzing ship stability, including the relative positions of CoB, CoG, Metacentre in various conditions.

Experience with GHS software or equivalent for intact and damage analysis stability analyses.

Experience with hand calculations for simple structural analyses (bending moments, UDL’s, point loads etc.) to analyze local stress and be able to calculate shear area of ship sections.

Experience leading or supervising staff including assignment of work and managing, monitoring, addressing and assessing performance.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Requirement to wear and maintain CSA approved safety footwear and maintain job-related personal safety equipment.
Requirement to, occasionally, travel on short notice using various means of transportation such as ships, planes, and helicopters.
Requirement to, occasionally, work extended hours or overtime to meet operational requirements.
Requirement to conduct site visits to vessels, shipyards, and other industrial sites, involving walking over rough terrain and/or climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolding, or other structures, maintaining balance on a moving vessel, and bending in awkward positions and working in confined spaces.
