The immediate intent of this process is to staff the position of Director, History and Heritage (DHH), within the Chief of Military Personnel Command.
The Chief of Military Personnel (CMP) / Military Personnel Command (MPC) is responsible for the overall personnel management of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), and oversees recruitment, training, education, pay, benefits, health services, honours, history, casualty support, career transition services and a host of other corporate and personnel support services.
The Director, History and Heritage (DHH) is accountable for providing a coherent, horizontal perspective to, and strategic integration of, the management of strategic programs and initiatives related to CAF history, dress, ceremonies, honours, museums, heritage, and music. The DHH serves a critical leadership role in the development and maintenance of strategic level collaborative networks and partnerships within DND/CAF, with the Office of the Chancellery (Rideau Hall), with Canadian Heritage, with Veterans Affairs, and with other government departments and institutions. The position is the departmental authority on military history and heritage and leads Canadian delegations representing Canada internationally at senior level at the United Nations and foreign countries.
Together, DND/CAF create the largest, and most complex organization in Canada. DND's role is to provide services and support to the CAF in their operations and missions at home and abroad. DND and the CAF work side-by-side to fulfill the Government of Canada’s mission to defend Canada and Canadians and contribute to international peace, security and stability efforts. The immediate intent of this process is to staff the position of Director, History and Heritage, within the Chief of Military Personnel Command, on an indeterminate (permanent) basis.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established to staff similar positions with various tenures and security requirements within DND as well as other government departments within the Public Service, with the approval of the delegated manager and in consultation with Executive Services.

EDUCATION
ED. Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.
EXPERIENCE
EXP1. Significant* experience in providing strategic advice and recommendations to senior management (Director General equivalent or above) on complex* policy, program or service delivery issues.
EXP2.Experience building and maintaining strategic alliances or partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including allies.
EXP3. Experience in managing human* and financial* resources.
* Significant Experience is defined in terms of the depth, breadth and scope of experience normally acquired by having performed a broad range of activities related to this task, usually over a period of approximately two (2) years within the last five (5) years.
*Complex issues are issues with at least two (2) of the following characteristics:
multidimensional, sensitive, confidential, affecting many stakeholders, precedent setting, having a major impact on the department or having potential for significant media coverage. Candidates must clearly demonstrate the complexity of the issues.
* Management of financial resources is defined as management and accountability for a budget, including responsibility for sound financial planning, forecasting and reporting. Applicants must also indicate the size of the budget they managed directly.
*Management of human resources includes leading a team and being accountable for a broad range of activities related to human resources management, such as performance management, staffing. Candidates must indicate the number of subordinate staff and the duration of time they managed them.
ASSET EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, in a field related to the position, such as, but not limited to, Canadian History, Military History, War Studies, Defence Studies.
ASSET EXPERIENCE
AEXP1. Experience with programs, policies or projects related to military history and/or military heritage (such as, but not limited to, ceremonies, dress, museums and music) of both Regular and Reserve Forces.
AEXP2. Experience representing an organization’s interests at national or international committees or forums.
AEXP3. Significant* experience in the development and coordination of complex horizontal policy analysis files.
AEXP4. Experience supporting a Panel or Committee of senior executives or Governor in Council appointments.
*Significant is understood to mean the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of related activities for a period of three (3) years or more.

Top Secret security clearance - for Director History and Heritage. Top Secret or Secret security clearance will be required for other positions.
All appointments and deployments (except acting appointments) to and within the Executive (EX) Group are subject to the Agreement to be Deployed provision, found in the Directive on Terms and Conditions of Employment for Executives.
Willingness and availability to work irregular hours, often on short notice and over an extended period of time.
Willingness and ability to travel, including internationally.
