Marine Search and Rescue (SAR) Coordinators provide an invaluable service to people in need of assistance on federal waterways. Maritime SAR Coordinators oversee the activation, planning, and coordination of Maritime Search and Rescue Missions’ with the help of Canadian Coast Guard vessels, Royal Canadian Air Force resources, and other partners.
In this position, you will be part of a team coordinating maritime Search and Rescue incidents. Although this job can be very demanding, it is also rewarding, thrilling and empowering. How would you like to contribute to saving lives and bringing families back together?

The intent of this process is to create an inventory of candidates to staff current and future vacancies in the Search and Rescue Coordination Centers within Canadian Coast Guard’s Atlantic Region. In order to meet the immediate need at those centers, the FIRST selection(s) will be completed on July 2, 2021. Consequently, we strongly encourage you to complete your application and submit it prior to this date to be included in the initial selection. All subsequent selections of applications will occur based on operational needs.

EDUCATION:
- Post-Secondary diploma
OR
- An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
- Minimum Watchkeeping Mate Certificate issued under the CANADA SHIPPING ACT, 2001 Marine Personnel Regulations SOR/2007-115, with a valid STCW 95 endorsement.
Experience:
- Minimum of 12 months sea time in the last five (5) years as a navigation officer working at sea (proof of sea time may be required)
OR
- Minimum of 12 months experience in the last five years as a maritime coordinator in a Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) or Marine Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) in Canada.
OR
- Minimum of 12 months experience as officer/supervisor of the watch in a Marine Communications and Traffic Services Centre (MCTS);
OR
- Minimum of 12 months experience in CCG operations, such as Canadian Coast Guard Regional Operations Centre, CCG Environmental Response or Search and Rescue Preparedness.
Asset Qualifications:
The following are not essential for the job but if you have them, your application must clearly explain how you meet them. These qualifications may be taken into consideration when selecting candidates for appointment.
Asset Occupational Certification:
- Valid Chief Mate, Near Coastal certificate of competency or higher issued under the CANADA SHIPPING ACT, 2001 Marine Personnel Regulations.
Asset Experience:
- Recent experience (within the last five years) in the position of Commanding Officer or Chief Mate of a vessel.
- Experience working in a Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC) or a Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC).
Asset Knowledge:
- Knowledge of Halifax Search and Rescue Region (Local geographic and environmental knowledge of the coastal and offshore waters in the area for which you are applying)
- Knowledge of the Powers of a Rescue Coordinator under the Canada Shipping Act 2001.
- Knowledge of the roles and the responsibilities of the Search and Rescue partners in Canada, particularly maritime and aeronautical Search and Rescue.
- Knowledge of Maritime Search and Rescue Practices and Procedures.

- Required to work 12 hour day & night shifts on a rotating shift schedule, including weekends and holidays
- Requirement to be part of a stand-by schedule and work overtime shifts
- Medical: In accordance with position standards
- Maritime search and rescue coordinators must wear Canadian Coast Guard uniform while on duty.
Candidates must successfully complete an On-The-Job Training program, as well as the following three courses, within 12 months of appointment:
- Maritime Search Planning;
- Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator;
- SAR Mobile Facilities/On-Scene coordinator
