What you will be doing
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• Conducting inspections and audits of railway facilities and operations within the region and recommending compliance and/or enforcement actions as required;
• Providing technical advice and guidance to stakeholders in the railway industry;
• Applying expertise in investigations of accidents, incidents, injuries and fatalities, complaints and other situations as it relate to acts and regulations; and
• Participating in the planning and implementation of the regional inspection and monitoring program.
Regional Railway Inspectors working in Operations have qualifications and extensive operational experience working in the railway industry. They must be skilled communicators capable of working effectively in a multi-disciplinary environment, exercising judgement, and adapting to the different needs of stakeholders. Inspectors must be able to negotiate, facilitate change, and respond effectively to stressful situations. In the course of ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements, inspectors carry significant responsibility and accountability as their decisions have a direct impact on the transportation system and safety of the travelling public.
The key activities of this position require extensive travel locally, regionally, and sometimes nationally to conduct inspections. Some tasks will also be performed in a typical office environment. Activities may be performed in various indoor and outdoor environments and under varying weather conditions.
The intent of this process is to staff one position for a two-year period.
A pool of essentially- and/or partially-qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar or equivalent positions of various tenures and/or various linguistic requirements within Transport Canada.

EDUCATION
- A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, experience and/or training.
EXPERIENCE
- Recent and significant* experience in the interpretation and application of the Canadian Rail Operating Rules as a locomotive engineer, conductor or railway traffic controller for a federal railway company.
- Experience in the preparation of reports.
- Experience in risk management and mitigation.
- Experience in observing and identifying non-compliance when applying the rules and regulations of railway operations, and providing appropriate corrective actions.
*Recent and significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience associated with having performed a broad range of various, complex related activities normally acquired over a period of three (3) years; and the performance of those duties within the last five (5) years.
Bilingual - Imperative (BBB/BBB)

EXPERIENCE
- Recent and significant* experience in the application of Part II of the Canada Labour Code and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (trains).
- Experience with functioning/operating of rail traffic systems.
- Experience in management of a team or work group.

KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of Part II of the Canada Labour Code and related regulations.

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS:

- Willingness and ability to travel on short notice for extended periods using all modes of transportation.
- Willingness and ability to exercise physical effort to climb, embark, and disembark railway equipment, at times on sites where access may be difficult and the terrain is rugged.
