Duties

Assists in and/or performs quality control activities as specified for the forensic analyses conducted.
Assists in and/or performs maintenance, calibration, verification and operation of scientific equipment and any accessories.
Assists in and/or performs ordering of materials and prepares reagents for laboratory analyses.
Assists in the conduct of routine forensic analyses, assesses results and reports observations in writing.

Work environment

Work is conducted in a laboratory environment where there is exposure to a variety of occupational hazards (biological, chemical, physical), some of which are not readily identifiable and as such an awareness of these risks must be maintained and appropriate safety procedures observed. As part of the criminal investigation process, there is lack of control over the pace of work and there is no tolerance for error.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff one position on an indeterminate basis, with a linguistic profile of English Essential and an RCMP Enhanced Reliability security clearance.

A pool of candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions within the RCMP in Canada on an indeterminate or specified period (including term, acting, or assignment) basis, with various linguistic profiles and various RCMP security clearances.

Should a Public Service (PS) employee be found qualified and selected for appointment, notification regarding the PS appointment, if applicable, will be posted on www.jobs.gc.ca in accordance with the Public Service Employment Act.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment prior to May 21, 2020 (deeming date), the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM. Furthermore, CM staffing transactions resulting from this process will be administered in accordance with the Onboarding Transition Phase until deeming day.

This position is comprised of a mandatory in-house training program. As part of the Operational requirements, the appointed candidate must successfully complete the applicable mandatory in-house training program as dictated in the applicable policy approved Learning Guide and/or Training Plan.

All applicants for positions within the Royal Canadian Mounted Police will be subject to a thorough security clearance process which includes an interview wherein questions may include (but not limited to), reference checks, previous employment, on-line activities, credit checks, alcohol and/or drug use.

NOTE: Candidates must meet the applicable Conditions of Employments at the time of appointment and must continue to meet these during the period of appointment.

The term understudy refers to any employee engaged in an in-house training program
that is required for a defined role within NFLS. The training program consists of reading assignments, written essays, practical exercises, study tours, oral presentations, group discussions, case studies, final written and oral examinations and if required, a mock trial. All of this training is taken under the supervision of qualified Examiners/Analysts.
The term applies to both newly-appointed probationary employees (staff) and to employees (staff) who have passed the probationary period, have completed an initial understudy and are either training in a different program or learning new technologies in their original program.

Preference will be given to veterans and to Canadian citizens, in that order, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
