Duties

Under this RAP work term, the student will develop novel ecotoxicology research on the effects and interactions of climate change and pollution on freshwater snails, using genomic approaches.

Duties will include:
- Conduct experiments on the effects of temperature and chemical exposure on the life cycle of the freshwater snail Planorbella pilsbryi
- Collect and process samples as required
- Extract samples for various analysis (metabolomic, proteomic)
- Analyse data using appropriate software
- Summarize results in peer-reviewed publications
- Participate in knowledge transfer of the research through participation at conferences and/or workshops

The project is in collaboration with Professor Denina Simmons, Faculty of Science, Ontario Tech University, where parts of the research will be completed.

Work environment

The work will be completed in collaboration between Ontario Tech University (Oshawa, Ontario) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (Burlington, Ontario). The candidate will be required to follow Environment and Climate Change Canada's COVID-19 restrictions during the hours working under the Environment and Climate Change Canada's contract. Therefore, until those restrictions are lifted, the candidate will be required to telework up to 25 hours per week until restrictions at Environment and Climate Change Canada change to allow in-person participation in research activities.

- The student must have graduated with a bachelor's degree in Science in biology, environmental science, biochemistry, chemistry or a related field.
- The student must be enrolled or planning to enroll (conditional to being appointed to the position) in a MSc program (MSc) at Ontario Tech University starting in September 2021.

Degree equivalency

Information on language requirements

- Knowledge of basic toxicology principles
- Knowledge of basic chemistry principles
- Knowledge of the Microsoft software suite (e.g., Excel, Word)
- Familiarity and / or willingness to learn new software
- Ability and willingness to work with and handle live animals (specifically snails) in the laboratory and/or the field

The following may be applied / assessed at a later date (may be needed for the job)

- As activities will be divided between Ontario Tech University (Oshawa, ON) and Environment and Climate Change Canada offices and laboratories (Burlington, ON), the student must possess a valid driver's license and be able to travel between locations as needed.
