The Building Systems Technician:
• Performs preventive maintenance such as inspecting, replacing components, testing and adjusting a variety of complex equipment and systems;
• Performs general maintenance on diesel generators;
• Responds to breakdowns, diagnoses and repairs, adjusts and calibrates a variety of complex mechanical equipment and systems;
• Overhauls or replaces defective parts, tests and adjusts a variety of complex mechanical equipment and systems;
• Removes and/or installs major pieces of equipment;
• Prepares detailed reports; accesses and updates computerized preventive maintenance schedules and records; orders parts and materials and estimates costs;
• Performs building maintenance and repairs covering a wide range of areas to include plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, electrical, general building repairs, painting, etc.;
• Maintains an inventory of consumable items such as filters, belts and procures replacement parts using an acquisition card or other procurement tool; and
• Performs routine inspections to find deficiencies on various facility equipment and structures.
The Saskatoon and Agassiz Research and Development Centres are among 20 research centres located across Canada. The Building Systems Technician positions are responsible for their duties in active research labs and farm field environments.
There is frequent exposure to: extremes of weather, hot/humid environmental conditions, noise, fumes, chemicals, acids which may be toxic or corrosive; there is a regular risk of minor injury when dismantling and installing equipment; there is occasional risk of injuries from lifting and carrying heavy materials/equipment, or from falls while working in elevated positions. There is a requirement to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety boots, eye, ear and respiratory protection gear and fall protection PPE.
The immediate need is to staff two positions:
• One full-time permanent position in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
• One full-time permanent position in Agassiz, British Columbia
If you don’t immediately receive a job offer at AAFC, qualified candidates will also be placed in a talent pool to be used for staffing similar permanent or temporary positions in the future. The skill specialization(s), work location, language profile, and security clearance requirements will vary according to the position being staffed.
In addition to permanent staffing, we will also use this process when needing to hire experienced public servants who are interested in temporary opportunities such as acting appointments, assignments, or secondments.

Education:
• Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Occupational Certification - Possession of ONE OR MORE of the following:
• Power Engineer License (minimum 4th class)
• Journeyman certification in one for more of the following trades: Plumber, Electrician, HVAC technician, Millwright, and/or Commercial Refrigeration and Air Conditioning technician
• Relevant certificates or designations issued by BOMI Education Canada
• An acceptable combination of training and/or experience related to the position
Experience:
• Experience with performing maintenance on systems such as but not limited to Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC) systems
• Experience working with trade contractors
• Experience working with computer software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Asset Qualifications - Experience:
• Experience working with building automation systems
• Experience working with computerized maintenance management system
• Experience working within an industrial or commercial complex

• Knowledge of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, including maintenance techniques and preventative maintenance practices related to commercial buildings
• Knowledge of building controls operation systems
• Knowledge of safety practices applicable to hot water heating, steam distribution or refrigeration systems
• Knowledge of applicable Standards, Regulations, Codes or Acts, such as ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers), Federal Halocarbons Regulations, or Canada Labour Code, etc.
